Tornado is making a return trip from Liverpool Street to Walton-On-The-Naze on Saturday 12 August, tickets are still available. During the day it is making return trips from Walton to Colchester Town (these trips are sold out)

Does anyone know if the shuttles will be making stops, and also I assume it will utilise one trip to then go into Colchester North to turn the train round for its return to London - if so does anyone know which one that will be?

Would this not have a 47 on the back

I wouldn't have thought so personally as the loco is operated by DB Cargo and not WCRC (the latter operate 47's, but refuse to operate Tornado). Would imagine a 66 or 67 would be in use if an accompanying loco is required.

Cheers

Will almost certainlly have something on the back - the Colchester Town branch is a good opportunity to turn the train round for going back to London at the end of the day, so I'd hope they will

What a disaster (for normal passengers) those trips turned out to be !
Tresspassers by the hundred all down the branch, at evert location you could think of, ended up with a blanket speed restriction for all trains Colchester to Walton all day, after numerous reports from Drivers !

Yes indeed!

These idiots have absolutely no idea of the carnage they caused! Not a clue! I really do hope it was no one on here but if so, do you realise you had drivers having done one trip on the branch, were then absolutely petrified of driving over the route again? Yes Well done you.

As for me, I did pass some "photographers" at Church St level crossing at 100mph and they were almost standing in the 4 foot on the UM this morning. You have no idea how it feels as a driver when you see non hi vized persons standing lineside. Yes thanks for that!!!!! Absolute IDIOTS! If i could have stopped and punched your lights out, I would have!!

Unfortunately the time has now come when these special trains will probably be relegated elsewhere, off the main lines. It's about time. HOPEFULLY!!! Until such time, Have some RESPECT!!!! Trains bloody hurt!!!

At least one person was arrested, if reports elsewhere are correct. This person was the initial cause of the timetable going 'orribly awry. Hid in undergrowth then emerged just in front of Tornado, camera in hand. One hopes that this act of lunacy was committed by a member of Joe Public, and not a railfan.

How much media coverage was there about these trains? And more importantly, was there sufficient emphasis given to the message about keeping off railway property, other than platforms?

It would be far more worrying to me if this emphasis was needed to be honest.

Remember the mass trespass incidents after Flying Scotsman's return? Lots of warnings were broadcast after the first trip. The message STILL didn't get through to a lot of people. Some of the incidents reported were scary.

Remember that yesterday was the first time that a lot of locals will have seen main line steam in action, and whereas we understand the 'dos and don'ts' of railways, many <ahem> 'normals' don't.

They know enough not to play on the motorway or play on a runway, why would railways be any different.

I think its a case of they know exactly what they are doing but simply do not care.

The mindset of the general public is a mystery, isn't it?

OK, airports - fenced off. Difficult to access.
Motorways - associated with cars, and therefore danger. Everyone knows about cars - it's drummed into you from a very young age
Railways - easily accessible, risk underestimated? But I take your point about some not caring - having said that, our own hobby has some arrogant scrotes too when it comes to taking their 'master shot'. I still believe that most of yesterday's muppets just weren't thinking - and sadly once one idiot gets near the tracks, others will follow.

The Tornado running to Walton on Saturday, gave rise to hundreds tresspassing incidents, extra staff had been drawn in to cover as much as possible, extra BTP units on patrols, Duty MOM, and extra MOM, staff from the OHL dept all trying to stop tresspass, but even with all the extra staff, the line was swarming with people, think there were at least two emergency brake applications, by service trains, even the footplate staff called in, end result all trains were cautioned all day ! Now who picks up the tab for that little lot ?

Well, exactly, who indeed? Which brings me back to my point about education. I still maintain that had there been a few high-profile and well publicised prosecutions, with maximum fines imposed, on just a few of the trespassers who were after seeing/photographing Flying Scotsman last year, then the message might have got through. It was madness not to do so. In addition, we don't have the graphic 'shock, horror' safety films that we used to have, because apparently it could traumatise viewers... More madness.

I wonder if the organisers realised what their day, which has been 2 years in the planning, don't forget, would unleash?

Yes, the easy option would be to ban these events, but is that the right thing to do? For every idiot there will have been many, many more sensible people simply wanting to experience a very rare event. Also, the railways need all the goodwill that they can get from the public, and like it or not, steam produces a lot of goodwill.

I hear, 12 hours plus in delays to WTT stuff, at over 10K

Was a very pleasant day for those of us who paid to travel behind her. Noticed people in the Cess from my service train (08:15 off WIV).

Frustrating to say the least. I wonder how many are actual rail fans or photters. Who the hell wants a photo from the cess?

Enjoyable day; frustrating though.

Personally I hope steam doesn't get 'banned' and whilst it's commercially viable I can't see it happening.

From memory and the Flying Windbag episodes of last year and mass encroachment did NR or BTP ever try and prosecute these trespass incidents? Do they ever?

Just a thought

Well if the £10,000 or more is correct, then the return for NR for the trip will be zero, in fact it may well not even cover the costs of allowing it run !

Goodwill is all very well, but not when you end up with a loss, and then there were the delayed passengers on 60 trains and one train cancelled.

I guess as it was tresspass its NR who then get the bill?

GA will be loving it, they managed to easily win back some of what the failure of their train Friday evening at Ingatestone cost them.

No they won't. This isn't McDonald's. Having been nowhere near this event, with only the reports on here to go by, it is difficult to see how a similar exercise with multiple trips over the same route will be permitted in future until the memory of this one fades.

Shame but having been involved in trying to 'protect' the public from themselves at similar events in the past, the stupidity of some has to be seen to be believed.

Not sure why they did not run it on Sunday, one WTT service each hour calling almost all stations, the 'steam' could have almost had the run of the branch to itself, and caused minimal delay

The event organiser wanted it on a Saturday - both GA and NR would have preferred Sunday.

If NR pass on the delay costs that it caused, which is over £10,000, this will have a big effect on the money the train brought in, which the BBC local website says approx 10K !
