It isn't 300 miles on a single charge. It's just over 200 miles on a single charge and then another 170 after 30 minutes if you plug into one of their super chargers. Doing that super charging regularly will damage the batteries. Around London and short trips, yes they will be perfectly viable and I expect to see more and more battery cars in London in the next 5-10. Replacing the ICE on long distance? Long long way off. Setting a rash target of 2040 for completely banning sales of ICE vehicles? Utterly ridiculous.....

Incorrect. The base model has a range of c. 200 miles, but you can upgrade to larger battery pack which gives a range of c. 300 miles.

Err, yes it is...

Add the bigger battery, and the Tesla's numbers get better. Range bumps up to 310 miles, the 0 to 60 time drops to 5.1 seconds and the top speed extends to 140 mph.

Based on that estimate, a rear wheel drive Model 3 with 75 kWh battery pack will top out at 310 miles of range per charge.

Right now, today, you can buy a car that can do 310 miles on one charge. Not a bit and then a bit more with Supercharge that's 310 miles + 170 miles with one thirty minute stop (and taking a break after driving for 310 miles is no bad idea).

Give it five more years of development and I have no doubt that those numbers will have been improved on significantly to the point that ICE cars start to look very poor comparatively.

The UK's first all-electric car showroom has opened in Milton Keynes, operated by Chargemaster, with eleven staff whose job is not actually to sell cars but to proselytise on behalf of the manufacturers, all of whom have a stake in the venture, with the notable exception of Tesla. I cannot find the newspaper article I read last week on the web, but the manager was quoted as saying he wanted to bust the myths surrounding electric cars, but part of this was not to overstate the battery charge range of individual models. The two examples he gave, one being a Nissan, involved his downgrading the official figures by between 30% and 40% as being more realistic in typical driving conditions.

Old jokes often being the best, you've put me in mind of this one:-

Of course, in reality, there are cars on the market that do in excess of 200 miles on a single charge.

I will typically use an ICE vehicle for around 60,000 miles before thinking about replacing it. The next time somebody quotes a range for whatever EV is flavour of the month can they also tell me the range that I will be getting when I come to sell it?

And 60,000 isn't much, my parents purchased one of their current Rover 45s at that level.... now coming up on 170,000.

If you can afford to buy a vehicle for cash then resale value is likely of little import.

That was my thinking. Anyone who can replace their car every 60,000 miles isn't exactly hurting financially.
