Pubs In Appleby

G'day everyone.

We're staying in Dentdale next week and may need a wet weather alternative. That alternative could well be Appleby and we're looking for pub recommendations! The pub must sell Real Ale and hopefully sell food as well.

Any suggestions?

I went there on the 88 tour a couple of months back, it made a nice change to Carlisle. The King's Head, despite being a hotel, had 2 or 3 local real ales on but I'm unsure if they do food. We ate in the Crown & Cushion, a Robinsons pub, old fashioned good value pub grub.

The nearest pub to the station is the Midland Hotel, literally 50 yards away. It came under new management in recent years and is a 'free house', and also serving food. It gets good reviews but it has been a couple of years since I went.

Just out of the main town area is The Royal Oak' about 10 minutes walk from the station. They serve food, using local suppliers where possible and always have at least three local beers available. This has long been the pub recommended by visitors and locals and would be well worth considering.

The pubs in the main town are all ok, without being outstanding and I would agree with 'theblackwatch' that The Crown & Cushion is possibly the nicest.

Just finally if you want a bit more up market there is The Tufton Hotel in the centre of town which is lovely and also The Appleby Manor which is a bit further out so would involve some walking or a taxi, it is in an elevated position and if it is a nice day sitting on their patio looking out over the Eden Valley is stunning.

I always enjoy the Hare and Hounds. They prefer to concentrate on the one ale (currently Bombardier) but I always find the atmosphere convivial.

The Midland Hotel is also a favourite, particularly the Perry.

both pubs in Dent sell real ale and food. Don't forget the The Station Hotel at Ribblehead (and the Hill Inn a mile or so away) if you're after a train ride to the pub....both do food and real ale.
If you're driving you may find a trip to Hawes or Ingleton a better bet than driving north through the farm tracks around Dent

I went last year with a couple of mates. It wasn't as good as I was hoping but nice enough.

There's a pub down a side street, off the main drag, which was disgusting. It had an unwashed dog smell and the Devonian owner, whilst nice enough, seemed a stranger to personal hygiene. What's more this guy does B&B and food. Yuk! Strangely though I had probably the best pint of the day in there, courtesy of Nottingham's Castle Rock Brewery.

I'll find out the name.

Just as an aside.......

My previous recommendations were based on you arriving by train and wanting something within walking distance. If however you do venture that bit further then for a really good country pub one of the best in the area is The New Inn at Hoff.

Hoff is a tiny hamlet about a mile or so out of Appleby on the road to Orton and Tebay. This is lovely, really nicely done out inside, it's run by a husband and wife, he works behind the bar and she cooks (all home cooked) both are very friendly. I can't remember the beers they had but I'm almost certain they had a few guest beers.

Many thanks for all of your suggestions. We'll probably head to Appleby on the Friday as the weather is looking awful that day. We're catching the train from Dent so we'll be visiting pubs in the town centre.

Thanks for the advice! My relatives live in Cowgill so we've had many a pint in all of those pubs! We also like the Sportsman's, especially as it is close to my sister in law! The Moorcock is also a nice pub.
