I was just wondering why this line has such a slow line speed at 60mph as faster journey times would help with GC and TPE trains as I thought when recently coming back from London

Is it beacause of the level crossing or is there weight restrictions???

I'd imagine some of it is to do with the line being 'foot crossing central'.

it was a backwater freight only line for a LONG time so I assume maintenance was done to a lower standard and less often than on the mainline.

There's a fairly significant 'dip' between Picton and Yarm (one half of which is imaginatively known as Picton Bank) and a kink at the lowest point.

That might be another limiting factor.
