We're one step closer to South Western Railway now....

The station announcements at London Waterloo now have 'new' Celia as of today (or yesterday) and she sounds really depressed. Bring back Old Celia! These new announcements also have South Western Railway on them for use from 20th August.

All other stations at the moment still have Old Celia and Phil for the time being which is a good thing, it's only London Waterloo from what I know.

These New Celia Drummond announcements can also be found at these stations:

  • Farnborough
  • Fleet
  • Winchester
  • Eastleigh
  • Southampton Airport Parkway
  • Andover

If you're bored of Ceila maybe if you asked nicely they could bring back "Boofay" :)

Was Boofay ever in SWT land?

Thought she was more BR Paddington/Reading/Western?

Can't ever remember hearing her down here, mind you she was legendary.

Whatever happened to that old thread on here ten years or so back with all the recordings on it?? :)

I heard her say the words "South West Trains Service to" once before on a so she must have been somewhere at one point.

She was also on many stations in East Anglia, especially those formally managed by Anglia Railways.

SWT services do stop at some GWR stations so that is where you may have heard her.

A small number of stations went over to new Celia over the winter, any further rollout appeared to stop once the franchise announcement was made.

In other words, as was mentioned last time someone posted it as 'news' it is probably not related to the franchise award at all...

Oh no. If there the ones I think they are then they sound awful. They sound like Celia was doing something for children's TV and not train announcements.

A letter to staff confirms that the full launch of the new franchise will be delayed until after the Waterloo Upgrade, on the 4th September. The focus at changeover on the 20th August will obviously be on the Waterloo Upgrade Project.

How will they take 10 minutes off the Waterloo-Exeter journey time? I'm guessing Feniton, Whimple and Pinhoe calls will get scrapped?

Pinhoe calls must actually increase as the franchise spec says all trains must stop there. Missing all or some of Clapham Woking Basingstoke and Andover is allowed and despite that ruining numerous connections that is what is most likely

There is dwell time outside of Waterloo and 5 minutes at Salisbury. A different approach to the utilisation of stock may see no / less requirement for attachments so that 5 minutes can be reduced.

We know we will have some challenges in the early days of the franchise with the Waterloo upgrade. Although you will start to see the new South Western Railway brand from day 1, the full launch of the brand is planned for 4th September.

Probably won't drop the Andover call as that requires 2 trains an hour in the franchise spec

I can see the Clapham call getting swapped over from the service from Exeter to the Salisbury local which could save some time, maybe also skipping Woking

The devil will be in the detail when it eventually comes out.

It'll be impressive if they do send the 159s through Woking flat out at 90, although every time I'm at Woking I always get nervous when there's a fast through the platform, even though Woking isn't really a hotspot.

I agree with having a frequent service from Pinhoe I guess this is the same for Cranbrook? Is the local Exeter to Honiton service still going ahead? I suppose if so it will take Feniton and Whimple calls.

I don't understand why they really want to reduce journey times on the Exeter service as it is unlikely to ever compete with the service to Paddington.

Also what does Woking really offer in terms of connections? Is it worth the Salisbury and the Exeter service calling there?

That depends on the pricing, surely. Decrease journey times a degree and introduce some cheap advances that undercut GWR and you could be onto a winner. Whether that happens or not given that both are First franchises is a different matter.

Yes, but everyone was saying that they stopped changing them when the franchise change was announced. I'm simply saying that isn't the case with Aldershot. :D
What I meant is that as 'voice updates' have been continuing before and after the franchise announcement, the indications are that it is a progressive change to the PIS and nothing to do with the franchisee changing, implying that it doesn't really need to be in this thread...

They are allowed to skip both Woking and Basingstoke with the fast Weymouth trains as well. All mentioned in the ITT. Another route speeded up. Maybe Woking passengers will just have to use slower trains and change somewhere...

Perhaps they could put all the passengers on the Basingstoke stoppers. Obviously if one of the trains also skips Basingstoke, they would need to change again at Winchester.

In that case the responsibility falls onto the Portsmouth Harbour Via Eastleigh services and the Poole stoppers. I'm still waiting to see if Weymouth keeps two London services.

Latest messroom rumours are that the new Portsmouth Weymouth services will be diesels, although personally there's too many holes in that plan.

The Guildford / Farnham / Aldershot areas, the Portsmouth Direct, connections to Gatwick via the North Downs line and Heathrow via the coach link...

Not everyone wants to go to/from/via Waterloo (or Clapham Junction).

The wording used was:
"Bidders may stop either, both or neither train at Woking and/or Basingstoke."
The implication is obviously therefore first stop Winchester, which will possibly need far more waiting room space.

But to put more detail in, there is only one fast Weymouth train required, the opposite half hour fast train is shown to be a Poole service.

The second Weymouth service was shown as an all stations stopper west of Southampton, and may be connected to a Waterloo - Southampton semifast...

Yeah but how many passengers want to go to those areas from west of Salisbury? I suppose you may get a few for Heathrow.

Judging by the number of people who board/alight the Exeter services at Woking, I would say quite a lot.

Would Aldershot passengers be obliged to change at Brookwood or is there an easement allowing travel via Woking?

It's been quite useful for me in the past going to Bristol, because it meant that I only had to change once although I suppose I could have changed at Basingstoke instead. Cutting Woking and/or Basingstoke from the Weymouth trains which some people have suggested would be a pain since it would make it harder to get down to Bournemouth and beyond for me, especially if both were cut. It would certainly make me more tempted to drive there instead if I had to make multiple changes.
