Thursday 13th July I buy return tickets New Milton Preston via Reading and Wolverhampton with seat reservations for the X Country from Brockenhurst to Wolverhampton and the Virgin from Wolverhampton to Preston leaving Brockenhurst at around 10am Sunday 16th July returning the following day the 17th leaving 14:15

Saturday 15th July for some reason that I cannot recall I check the tickets and to my horror discover they are for outward on the 15th (today) at 09:03 and back on the 16th 14:15.

At Brockenhurst booking office at 16:30 I explain the position to the booking clerk and after quite rightly telling me that I should closely inspect ticket at the time of purchase - he then cancelled all booked seats refunded all the fares paid and then re-issued all the tickets and reservations.

Having gone to Brockenhurst fully expecting to have to pay for the outward journey again as it was several hours after the purchased tickets said I should have left; I was pleasantly surprised and am very grateful for a very polite and knowledgeable booking clerk at Brockenhurst station who took the time (about half an hour) and trouble to correct my stupid mistake.

If anyone on here knows who he is will they please give him my sincerest thanks

First of all you sound like you approached it in the right way- Ive seen too many take an aggressive line of "you gave me the wrong tickets". Mistakes/miss hearing does happen. We have a sign in the office "have you checked your tickets". We also give customers the Journey Print when the tickets are in the basket on STAR and ask them to check it before taking payment.

Secondly cancelling/refunding AP's are a ball ache admin wise as you found out.
Thirdly you got lucky on the cost for the next day.

Assuming they were Advance tickets. There's nothing in the original post to say they were.
Well maybe not explicitly, but the following bit strongly suggests that:
Having gone to Brockenhurst fully expecting to have to pay for the outward journey again as it was several hours after the purchased tickets said I should have left
Unless the OP didn't know that walkup fares are refundable?
