Just a quick question.

Heading from Civitavecchia to Rome.

When booking direct on the Trenitalia website, you choose a train time. But then it says:

Ticket reference, thet begin within 4 hours from the departure of the train indicated on the receipt / ticket. Change Ticket, change reservation and refunds are not allowed.

So if I book a train for 7am can I use it up until 11am on any train?



Second question:

If I'm going from Livorno to Florence, can I buy the (return) ticket (says the same thing as above) and get off at Pisa on the way? Then get back on the train and continue to Florence a couple of hours later?

Dunno. If it's not an advance ticket at a reduced price, I'd probably just get a ticket on the day from the machine, regional trains you stamp the ticket in the green machine (you have to complete the journey 4 hours after stamping), inter city type trains you have to get a particular train.
Booking on the internet is slightly different as the tickets are pre stamped so you have to use within a certain time period.
The regional trains from Livorno are very cheap, the inter city trains aren't, I'd just get a ticket for each leg (horn) LOL

Yes - as long you stick to the regional trains. ( I'm assuming you've got EUR 5.00 Bigletto Elettronico Regionale.)

Your ticket is already validated and allows you to travel on your chosen train or on others on the same route in the four hours after the departure time selected at purchase.

I think that would be allowed given the above.

I'd never bother buying in advance but I understand that Civitavecchia can get very busy with cruise ship passengers which is why some people buy online.

Good point.
There's also a day ranger type ticket, valid Civitavecchia to Roma and other (regional) trains, not sure where you can buy it.
There are regular direct trains to the city centre (smaller) stations, but the limited stop direct train to the main Roma Termini station does go on a longer route.

There are plenty of ticket machines in Civitavecchia, and I found them very easy to use when we were there a few years ago. There is an English language option, and it's very clear.

We ended up on the top deck of a very comfortable and pretty empty double deck train. On the way back the train was very busy, and it's a very long walk from the concourse at Temrini, so leave plenty of time!

I see that a regional train can be faster than a IC. Even if it has 6 extra stops.

I get on the italian website for the 47 minutes train (Frecciabianca) 10 euro as single ticket; IC 8,5 and all other trains 5.

As mentioned earlier, some Regionals run on a shorter route to the smaller stations in the city centre, the intercity trains take a longer route to reach the main platforms at Termini.

Hello - so that route is also regional trains (well accelerated regional trains or regionale veloce taking 1h20). The pricing/ticket is always a single and is a fixed price, walk up ticket - in this case EUR9.70. It is simple to buy them at the station on the day before travel. Remember that when you buy them you then need to stamp them before you get on the train using the cancelling machines provided at the station. The reason being that you are then allowed 4 hours to complete your journey and this confirms date and time the journey started.

As to your question on breaking your journey, the extract from the terms and conditions states: "Fermate intermedie – Il viaggiatore può effettuare un numero illimitato di fermate durante la validità del biglietto. Il viaggiatore che si trova in treno allo scadere della validità del biglietto può proseguire il viaggio già iniziato fino alla stazione di destinazione sen
za effettuare fermate intermedie se non per cambio
con il primo treno utile." In short, passengers can break their journey as often as they wish during their journey. If a passenger finds themselves in the train at the time the validity of their ticket runs out, they can continue the journey that they have already commenced to their destination station but without making any intermediate breaks in their journey, except where changing to the first possible train to complete their journey [i.e. where there is no direct route].

Hope that helps - depending how long you want in Pisa it may be better to buy a single to Pisa and then another from Pisa to Florence (Firenze) given the four hour validity rule. Cost is EUR 2.60 and then on to Florence is EUR 8.40 (so a bit more overall).

In Roma Termini i arrived at track 25/26. Had to walk long way to reach the main station.
