Conductor Role What To Expect? (GWR)

I have just been successful in getting a job as conductor for GWR.

Just wanted to know what to expect before I start.

Do you learn one route and stay on it or move around? What sort of shift patterns can be expected?

Anything useful I should know?

You'll learn all the routes and traction at whatever depot you are going to. You'll work all those routes and traction whenever the diagram requires it. You'll need a current GWR conductor to tell you exactly what you'll learn.

Shift patterns are designed to destroy your body clock. Again operator specific but in general (except for 24 hour services" shifts generally have their earliest start at 3-4am and latest finishes at 1-2am.

Useful things to know, lots and lots and lots but you'll learn them in time. But be prepared to be constantly surprised by the idiocy of the human race.

Routes and traction depend on what depot you are based at. Which depot will you be a part of?

I will be based at Bristol Temple Meads. As a newbie do they put you on a route for a while to let you get the hang of it or are you expected to know them all straight away?

Also what sort of hours are the shifts as its only a 35 hour working week.

You will sign BTM to Gloucester, Cardiff, Taunton, Westbury and Severn Beach, and Gloucester to Swindon via Kemble initially, in time you will sign Weymouth and Portsmouth. Traction will be 150/3/8/9 and 165/6.

Turn lengths vary, it's only an average across the roster. Anytji g else feel free to pm me
