July 2nd 1989 i had 91005 and HST power car 43013 (converted to a DVT) for haulage on the ECML. What i want to know is was 43013 working while the 91 was dead in tow? Because i can't remember.
The link below shows it quite clearly happened on some of these formations as the 91 pan was down.
And as 43013 is in the NMT these days it is hard to mark it for haulage.
Yeah i know i'm on a long shot here and clutching at straws.:D

This link confirms 91005 was with 43013 on that day in the ECML section

Would a single Class 43 power car have ever been able to get a Mk3+91 set moving? Not at any significant speed I would have thought.

The class 43 was converted into a driving power car as a stop gap to allow the 91s to operate the Mk3 sets, the 43 being modified with buffer and remote control equipment (different to the original) additionally fitted. These were super poweres as the 91 was under power too. Once sufficient Mk4s and Ml4 DVTs were in service the buffer fitted class 43s were intially part of Virgin's fleet then ended up stored until taken up by NR or GC

There were numerous occasions in the early days of the 91s where either a fault on the loco or (more usually) a TDM fault resulted in the power car working solo with the 91 dead in train. If the TDM fault was apparent at Leeds (as opposed to developing en route) the 91 would occasionally be run round to haul the train 'blunt end first'.

91s and 43s working in tandem was mentioned on a different thread in the last year and it was said that they did work in together although I'm not sure if they did straight away after introduction.
I can't unfortunately remember where the thread was, it may be buried somewhere in the history section.

This is on the 125group page. I think the date should be 1989 not 1988 though.

"Operation of the Class 91/’surrogate DVT’ formation on Kings Cross to Leeds service commenced in March 1988 and after a few weeks of operation it was found that the power cars were suffering from spending all their time idling on just 1000rpm, and their traction power was reinstated creating 8000+hp formations capable of quite brisk performances! As the deliveries and commissioning of Mk 4 sets took place the later in 1988 the DVT modified power cars were released back into normal duties".

Yes that's pretty much the gist of what was said on the forum recently. I didn't experience it but it sounds like fun having them both working. :)

Sounds like there was a good chance it was under power so I say mark it for haulage. Let's face it, you're very unlikely to get another chance...!

Also, if it was just in "DVT mode" wouldn't that pretty much count anyway? I'm assuming for folk who tick DVTs off you'd mark (say) 82222 for "haulage" if it was on the train you were on (certainly if it was leading) even though it clearly doesn't provide any power.

Helping you clutch at those straws here... I reckon you've got a good grip of them and need to tick 43013 off :D
