So was that you and Blindtraveller(?) at the front end of 142017 heading up to Chathill from Morpeth? I got off at Widdrington but couldn't help overhearing the chat about the relative merits of various TOCs First Class food offerings! :D

It was indeed us!

He was adament I would be wasting money on a First Class ALR. I'm a fussy eater you see, but I still say it would be worth the ching.

Is the chippy any good in Widdrington? About the only place I saw worth noting up that way!

The Widdy Chippy has some odd opening hours (often shutting by 9pm and other evenings not bothering at all). In my experience it is okay but nothing special. There's also an Indian takeway/restaurant just behind the chippy/Co-op building. The chippy on the corner of the street at Amble Harbour is arguably the best in the area, but it's a while since Amble was served by rail. No idea what the Junction Restaurant across the road from Widdrington Station is like, I've never been in it.

Morpeth during the morning - head left out of the station and follow Coopies Lane over the B&T level crossing. You'll see a burger van at the junction ahead - Jill does wonderful sausage baguettes, and great value for money. Her van is less than five minute's walk from the station and is open weekdays from around 8am until early afternoon. If you've got time to spend and don't mind walking into the town, Cube (on Newgate Street) does great breakfasts/rolls/midday meals, for great prices.

Alnmouth - you'd have to walk down through Hipsburn (the village where the station is situated) and along the road to Alnmouth before finding anywhere to eat. It's at least a mile and a half's walk.

Chathill - as you've probably discovered, there's nothing there at all. The nearest pub is the Pack Horse in Ellingham, but that's a good two miles or more walk away.

Taking the dog for another walk? ;)

Not this time though, although it was a reconnaissance mission to see if a day trip with my partner and the dog would work out walking between Dalmally and Loch Awe (which it would not, as there is hardly any pavements along the main A85).

I also took the chance to make use of the additional summer Sundays Only Edinburgh - Oban return working, as there are departures off Oban at 16:11, 17:11 (Edinburgh), and 18:11.

Also, as the Class 73 on the Fort William - Edinburgh portion of the sleeper was required (73966), I also took the chance to have a run from Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy to meet it there (the crew change at Bridge of Orchy on Sundays as it departs Fort William slightly earlier, with the Mondays to Fridays changeover done at Rannoch). I still did not manage to find 156453 - my final Scotrail Class 156.
