Season and Oyster split ticket

Hey guys,

I'm going to be using a season ticket and (work) oyster card to travel between Harpenden and St Pancras next week. The season ticket is from Harpenden-West Hampstead, and oyster for use between West Hampstead and St Pancras. As one of the tickets is a season, does this mean I'm limited to trains stopping at West Hampstead?

No, not any more. It's allowed under the new Conditions of Travel.

How do you propose to touch in your Oyster at West Hampstead if you are on a non-stop train?

Providing that the (work) Oyster card has at least a zone 1-2 travelcard stored on it then you'll be fine. If it only has PAYG credit then you'll need to get off at West Hampstead to touch in.

The OP is not using Pay As You Go; they are using a Travelcard.

The OP did not state that there is a Travelcard product stored on the Oyster card, so it is supposition on your part that it is.

I know that Oyster cards can be shared making the concept of an employer supplied and presumably financed card legitimate. But once a Travelcard is loaded, doesn't the card then become personal to the user?

Yes that is correct, an Oyster season is non-transferable as per their T&C:

6.1.3 If your Oyster card only has pay as you go credit at adult rate on it, you can lend your card to someone else, even if it is registered in your name. They must carry the Oyster card with them when travelling. If you have a season ticket on your Oyster card, you cannot lend or transfer it to anyone else.

Whether it is detectable or not is a slightly different matter, but that is the rule.

Oyster is a medium. It is true that this medium is one method of using PAYG, which requires tapping in. PAYG is, as you identify, clearly completely incompatible with the concept of Condition 14.2 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

I am in discussions with the OP via PM; I understand the OP has a pass entitling travel, which is held on the Oyster medium, and is not proposing to use PAYG (in fact the specific Oyster card held cannot be used for a PAYG journey and this functionality is disabled) however I have since discovered that the OP is mistaken regarding the validity of the pass between West Hampstead and St Pancras: it's not valid on GTR between these stations.

So the answer is that if the pass held on Oyster is to be used between West Hampstead and St Pancras, the OP would have to change there onto London Underground services to complete the journey (Jubilee + Metropolitan Lines)
