Totally agree these are great. As a matter of interest, are the routes public footpaths or can you rely on much more liberal access rights which exist North of the Border?

I think the Spean Bridge - Fort Augustus (at the southern end of Loch Ness) line would make a stunning preserved line that would help traffic issues mid-summer. A service from Fort William - Fort Augustus would be a fantastic ride. Shame it closed in the 1930's..
That must indeed have been a great route scenically; if only it had enjoyed better fortune...
An idle thought: supposing for just a moment, that the Spean Bridge -- Fort Augustus line had been a lot more successful, and had stayed active with a passenger service in the national system, up to the present day. Killjoy-ish of me perhaps; but I find the marketing practice of recent decades, of giving cutesy-and-naff names to particular routes as the So-and-So Line, rather repellent. For instance, I recently discovered that Nottingham Grantham Boston Skegness is now styled the "Poacher Line: so far as Im concerned, ugh. At least the Fort Augustus branchs long-ago demise, has spared it the indignity of being branded as the "Monster Line !

Haha! Indeed. Despite being Lancashire born and bred, I've had a long held fascination with the line and have often wondered why they didn't push to Inverness. Maybe the line would still be in service today...
The Highland Railway was very averse to this coming about, not wishing for competition from an alternative through route to Inverness from the south. Assorted machinations went on, connected with this issue.
