I see that a 68 dragged one of the failed 37 sets the other day. My question is how come when one fails these days why don't they just use a none ets loco to at least get the train and passengers home even if not to finish the diagram? I recall last year 259 being out for a while.

Would it have been quicker to press the 68 into action rather than finding a none heat class 37?

Yes I guess so but the failures have happened fairly regularly. I was meaning on the other occasions. Just lately there has only been one set out for about 3 days or so. I am curious to know the reason to not sub for something else? Ta

Northern staff the trains as I understand it and are only trained on 37s, and Northern management seem unwilling to persue the possibility of arranging to put two locos back on the trains to aid in reliability of the services.

Two 37s, double the problems ..... ;)

37s do fail a fair bit but by and large the problem is the staff failing and cancelling when there's no need

I'm generally not one for engineering fantasy on here, and I'm not going to say this is desirable or achievable, however, what would it take to make the 68s compatible in push-pull mode with a rake of Mk2s with a DBSO?

;)

A lot of time and effort. The wiring required is only the crux of the problem. Your main one is all the Northern staff etc that would require training on the locos.

Plus your next issue is DRS not having enough to cover it. At the moment there should be 2 active locos, a hot spare and a loco on maintenance. Chance would be a fine thing at present with the /4s. When TPE kicks in, almost all the 68s will be accounted for.

As has been said the 68's wont be available for long once TPE get going and imagine its not going to be cheap to modify the DBSO to make work with a 68.

The solution should be to give a higher priority for replacement when additional Northern rolling stock becomes available even at the expense of elsewhere and increased services, but expect these will be carrying on until 2019.

Saturday before last I was on these the afternoon train from Carlisle broke down 37 403 just short Barrow with overheating, eventually got into Barrow about 15 late. The return was cancelled, and the following DMU from Carlisle was nicked for the return instead of running through to Preston. a Single car 153 was then used for Preston instead of it going to Millom which was my train and it was a bit cosy to say the least. Anyway I did manage to get back to Carnforth in time for the Leeds Train.

So for me it was an enjoyable day on the 37's. but for real passengers it wasn't so good as per usual.

I am aware that there are several Class 67s that have been short of work in recent times (according to posts in other threads).

Could Class 67s be used, or are they banned (similar to Crianlarich - Oban I believe)?

The 67's use the same American multiple working system as the 68's as far as I am aware so the DBSO's would still require significant modification, plus of course the trains are run by DRS and they don't have any 67's.

So added to the fact that these trains are not particularly reliable they also must be very expensive to run so the dft in conjunction with Arriva need to bite the bullet in my view and replace earlier than intended perhaps using units released by Blackpool electrification.

I'm guessing that 2 x 156's would be sufficient plus maybe and additional dogbox for the busiest working.

The 68s' native system (wire train bus) is not the same as the 67s (AAR). The Chiltern 68s (008-015) have a limited form of AAR to give compatibility with the Chiltern stock.

DBSOs and Mk2s are fitted with blue star MW wiring. Obviously this is only compatible with the 37/4s.

A load of new wiring required to work with anything else.

It took long enough to get Northern bods all "trained" on 37s, it's not worthwhile to retrain on other locos after spending the money (again) on the stock.
It's either see it through to the end or replace the LHCS with other stock ASAP.

Service totally haywire this morning on the Cumbrian Coast, but the looks of RTT.

Kicked off with the 05.46 ex Barrow - would appear the Cl 37 failed at Green Road

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/GNR/2017/07/19/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

But then a string of other cancellations - not clear why. And not all Cl 37 trains either.

But it is the second major failure of a Cl 37 this week, I think it was Monday the first up train from CArlisle failed to make it to Preston.
EDIT - apologies - it was last Wednesday, and one failed in the afternoon.

Are we surprised? Typical of the ongoing malaise on the Cumbrian .... roll on the DMUs.

This really can't continue until displaced stock arrives from elsewhere after the trains from Spain are delivered.

As a Short term measure could an option be for Scotrail to release 2 156s early to cascade to Northern which is due to happen anyway. 2 158s could then take over a couple of the via Shotts diagrams and then a pair of 158s could be replaced by an additional 68 hauled peak time diagram round the Fife Circle where they seem a bit more reliable. The Cumbrian coaches could make their way north and be combined into a longer set for this. I believe the Anglia 68s finish soon so this should free up the loco and at least it would rid Northern of the locos and should mean no additional crew training etc anywhere.

Hi all. It's been a very long time since I had seen on a daily basis class 37s and similar era locomotive running past the house I used to live in. That was the 80's. Up until recently and not being a train enthusiast was unaware that these old locomotives still ran on the lines on regular passengers service such as the Cumbria coastal line.

I admit I haven't kept up with what happens on the rails in the past 20 years but I was in Cumbria last year and took a ride on a class37 on the Cumbria coat line. I loved it. Haven't heard the sound of those locomotives engines for years. They are quiet interesting compared to modern day stuff.

Have seen guy on YouTube saying that the 37s on that line are going the end soon.

Does anyone have information when they will be fully removed from service.

Are there any other areas of the uk running class 37s on regular passengers service

Thanks to all. As you can see im a novice when it comes to trains but hold nostalgic memories of the old 37s

Hi. This is actually a relatively recent development — there is currently a DMU shortage, hence the 37s being pulled out of (passenger service) retirement.

I can't answer as to the exact replacement date but it certainly seems likely in the next year or two that they will no longer be needed, due to the new DMUs on order and cascaded ones thanks to electrification.

The other place on the network where they operate regular passenger services is Anglia, on Norwich to Great Yarmouth services. I believe they don't always run depending on availability so you have to turn up and hope they're out. And previously they've had two diagrams in summer months, though I believe last year one of these was a 68. I'm not sure, someone who's done this more recently can probably comment more accurately than me.

The experience of an older locomotive - or indeed, for many, any piece of machinery of various sorts! - is a pretty stirring thing. That truly beastly sound, the theatre of it, and simply the knowledge that something has survived almost a lifetime and continues doing what it was made for, is genuinely rather moving. Long may these incredible machines continue to play their part!

In summer they ran 37s and 68s on the Norwich to Great Yarmouth but it's just the 37s on weekdays at the moment.

Welcome as a new correspondent. Did you know that you (and only you as the OP) can correct your typo in the thread title by just clicking on the thread and then correcting it (top right IIRC).
Hope that helps. It is also useful to give the title a meaning.
