I'm travelling from Sion to Basel - Mulhouse Airport on the 29th July, and I'm trying to find the cheapest ticket for my friends, as I'll be on FIP coupons.

The cheapest I can find is a €49,90 Sparpreis Schweiz to Freiburg, would a walk up single work out less, or do SBB do advance tickets on this route?

Thanks for your help

Walk up single is CHF93

Supersaver Ticket CHF 46.60 but only on some trains

You need to go to SBB.ch and enter passenger names etc

Thanks! I'm quite flexible as our flight isn't until 22:20 so I'll have a look when they go on. The website says tickets are only available until 20/07 today, so I assume I'll be able to find them from the 29th?

The DB trick has the advantage that the "Booked Train" rule only applies from where you join the cross-border service, so building in a stopover at Basel SBB and deselecting ICE trains in Switzerland will give you total flexibility - and with an overnight you can cut the price further.

Choosing an early Sunday morning train for your ICE (even from Basel SBB) gets you down to EUR29.90. And stopping short is perfectly OK.

You can use your other stopover if you want to specify your route within Switzerland - the old Loetschberg? Lausanne-Biel? (I haven't checked).

So if I have this right I can book the 18:58 but travel on any train on that route on the same day?

Yes, though I would in any case recommend not booking the very last possible connection.

I've even found it confirmed on a DB site. It says the Zugbindung (much neater than "booked train only rule") only applies to/from the first change of train in Switzerland. You must however follow the routing on the ticket within Switzerland, hence my suggestion about the second stopover facility.

Just to check before I commit, if I book the

18:58 Sion - Visp 19:24
19:28 Visp - Basel 21:29
22:17 Basel - Freiburg 22:50
€34,90 Sparpreis Schweiz

this will be valid on the 15:26 departure from Sion, on the same route, changing at Visp and Bern

Thanks

EDIT:

The 15:26 departure is €34 now too, so I'll just book that. Thanks for all your help, I'm sure it'll come in handy in the future

Happy to oblige. The price of these tickets is generally determined by the cross-border DB service you choose, so a late evening or early Sunday service is the obvious choice.

And just to repeat, even if you book the 15:26 you can still take an earlier train so long as it takes the route shown on the ticket itself.
