that as soon as the train moves about 10 metres it announces the next station!

It does that. It informs the pax of the next stop, then when approaching announces that it is approaching x. I think it's a good system, but unaccustomed punters are forever getting up for stop x as soon as it's announced that it's the next stop. Usually the PIS screens alternate between that and "this is coach number x of y"

but I really don't think the Southern colours do them any justice. I can just imagine how much nicer they would be in First colours (and I never thought I'd say that considering the use of blue and pink!).

Sorry - got to disagree. The Southern livery looks amazing on them; the curves and general profile of the Electrostars suits them really well.

I meant on the inside, not outside. I have used the 377s before to go to Brighton, but not for a while and I forgot how 'green' they were.

I also think it's rather funny looking at that silly first class section at the end, with the same seats and virtually no separation. Clearly the whole carriage was meant to be first class! Does anyone seriously pay for first class on one of these with Southern?

Hi,

New member here. Took part in the "Last Train From Moorgate" shenanigans last Friday and enjoyed a friendly chat with Ms Holt.

I regularly commute into St Pancras Intl from Flitwick in the morning between 07.00 and 07.30, then home again from Blackfriars any time from 17.00 to 18.30.

So far this week I've only seen 377s heading north to Bedford in the morning peak and south towards London/Brighton/Kent etc in the evening.

Can anyone tell me if I'm going to have the pleasure of sampling the new stock or whether I'm destined to put up with 319/3 hell forever?

Thanks

Going southbound, there are currently no 377 Flitwick departures between 0609 and 0903 for probably a good few months, but the 1822 Blackfriars northbound departure involves a 377 pair.

As for the services you've noticed, six 377s are specifically allocated to them because of Selective Door Opening requirements; once FCC get enough 377/5s to displace the hired 377/2s and provide additional capacity there will be a few more Electrostar services on the flagship Bedford-Brighton route.

IME 319s vary in quality, by and large /2s and refreshed /4s are decent and considering where you travel from /3s shouldn't really pop up often, though units do seem to randomly diagrammed at times.

Anyway, I digress. The 1856 Blackfriars northbound departure (recently lengthened from 4 to 8 cars) consisted of 219 and 217! [I suppose there's not much point trying not to couple /2s together in the short term...]

Welcome to the forums BTW :)

Morning there isn't a train around either side of your travelling but the 18:56 will be a 377/5 at some point once the fleet numbers increase. Just to point out this situation is what its due once all 23 Electrostars have been deliveried as Ive worked off the booked 377 duties. Until then you may get the odd random 377/5 working it although its likely to replace a four car working.

As for the CIS on the side of the train, Ive spoked to the MD herself and expressed a concern over this as its a major issue. Especially at a station like St Pancras.

I have to say I haven't seen any of the this is coach x of y at all even when 501 was attached to 208 (I think). I thought that was strange when I got back as Im used to travelling on the 375. Also to point out that the cab layout is abit different from Southern's current 377's as its missing a SDO button as one of their drivers informed me once he saw the cab pictures.

No-ones picked up yet on the poor quailty of build as in places you can clearly see foil behind guard and the rack has a 0.5cm gab from the body of the unit. Not good.

mackenzie_blu & Edvid,

Thanks very much for the info, guess I'll have to work late a bit more often!

Seriously though, I do like the refresh applied to the 319/4s and the seating/layout in the 319/2s is also much more comfy for those of us with a wider girth than we'd like. Haven't spotted any "pole dancers" in the 319/2s yet.

I do hope that the FCC 377s come on stream in time for the summer months as there's nowhere to hide from the heat in the 319s.

I try to catch the 07.05 from Flitwick and at present there seems to be no guarantee of a pair of 319/4s or 319/2s appearing, which is surprising since that train only calls at Luton, Harpenden & St Albans before St P Inlt.

I've noticed that 319430 seems to be the only unit left in the silver/blue livery, is that the case?

Any drivers on here, could you tell me if there are any 319s that are better or worse than the others to drive and any units you try to avoid taking out for various reasons?

Cheers

Got on 377 501 tonight, from Blackfriars to St Pancras (well, to Bedford!) and it certainly does take time to change power at Farringdon. Seemed to power down twice, and changing power resets the PIS too!

With the 'new car' smell, I must say it looks much nicer than the older* 377s but it does still feel small inside (disabled toilet excepted!) - and I was in the 2+2 section! I was expecting to hear a few commuters commenting on the new train, but heard nothing! Ungrateful sods. :) Oh, and first class has proper sliding doors so it does actually feel separate to the rest of the train.

The 1810 to Gillingham from Blackfriars was also made up of 2x377s, but the screens on the platform were giving the wrong stopping pattern - missing a range of stations between Swanley and Rochester. Caused platform staff loads of hassle, and they were reluctant to tell people to ignore the screens as they weren't 100% sure if the other information was right [it was].

* I realise they're hardly that old, especially considering I came home on a 313!

This is not the only thing missing out of CIS.

All the stations east of Otford is missing with the exception of Maidstone East and all the stations between Tulse Hill and London Bridge with the bizarre exception of South Bermondsey are also missing.

Hi mate. You cant avoid taking units out for whatever reason unless there is something wrong with it.

Most 319's are very noisy at speed, wind noise is terrible in the cabs and often drivers will reduce speed because of this.

319214 is a complete mess inside and out though.

One thing is for sure, the major delays in their production are very costly for Bombardier.

Even before the KO0 changes, FCC weren't particularly good at assigning units to appropriate diagrams. Not too long ago I was on a /2 doing an all-shacks Moorgate - Luton service, and more than one of them have been to Sevenoaks today.
I've noticed that 319430 seems to be the only unit left in the silver/blue livery, is that the case?
Yes it is. It was probably given a technical overhaul in 2006 hence why it's at the back of the queue for a refresh; the 377/5 issues have ensured the survival of that livery for several more months so it'll still be around in a year unless the sequence changes.

By my estimation the whole process lasts 45-50 seconds, after that the driver is either usually waiting for departure time, or for a danger (signal) aspect to become a proceed aspect etc. Of course the unit may sometimes disgrace itself.

It does seem cosy, but not necessarily in a bad way IMO. Unless of course it's packed. It wasn't until after my 2 rides in it that I really noticed how the 377/2s were starting to show their age.
I was expecting to hear a few commuters commenting on the new train, but heard nothing! Ungrateful sods. :)
Believe me, people on the 0854 ex-Bedford were talking about it today especially at St Pancras when the doors didn't open for 6/7 minutes. At Luton Airport Parkway the unit came in 5 minutes late and the doors took a few minutes to lock, same thing happened at Harpenden increasing the delay (and I think StP too) although the three stations after StP were OK.

I guess lack of communication with the GPS satellites/track balises was the cause of the delays which resulted in unhappy passengers (including myself) getting off at Blackfriars before 501+208 were made to go non-stop to Brighton.

After that I got the 0956 ex-Kentish Town which was caught up in the farce and made fast to Sevenoaks after Bromley South, with only a Travelcard I was hoping to go to St Mary Cray but the 1034 ex-Sevenoaks was on the opposite site of the same island at BMS so I got that instead hoping to ride on the Up/Down Relief after Dock Jn North.

Instead we stayed on the Down Moorgate and terminated at Platform 2, delaying an ex-Brighton service further, and the 1156 ex-Kentish Town was unusually in Platform 3 rather than the expected Platform 1. So I did travel along the Up/Down Relief, just in the opposite direction.
Oh, and first class has proper sliding doors so it does actually feel separate to the rest of the train.
For that reason I think of them more as a 377/4 descendant with all the AC gizmos than a 377/2 descendant.
By the way, is it just me or is part of the floor in 501 slightly different to the 377/2s?

Yesterday I was told to press the shoes up button for two seconds. Then press the AC select button for two seconds, wait for ten to fifteen seconds then press pan up for two seconds. Quick and had no problems at all.

One other thing I forgot to mention - after we left StP I noticed Tim Shoveller (MD of EMT) was on board. Or at least it was someone who looked a lot like him, I'm not sure.

Is that your Brompton, or two passengers with very similar bikes? There seems to be a lot of space between the luggage rack and the first seat.

There have been some changed to the disabled toilet. The older toilets are black instead of stainless, and the flush is behind the toliet lid. The emergency alarm might be in a different place, and I don't think they have a hinged support rail.

Why isn't there one button for AC and one for DC? Are there many situations where you'd need full manual control?

All this fancy technology like GPS is wonderful - when it works!!

Why can't there just be a digital screen in the cab that says what length the train is - and all the relevant information if SDO is required. That way you'd never stop short or open the wrong number of doors - and wouldn't need to rely on GPS that doesn't seem to work very well.

I wonder if the trains can download the satellite positions regularly, to massively speed up the time it takes to lock on to them? It sounds like they've been struggling even at outdoor stations, suggesting the warm and hot starts are still too slow.

I had the joy of a core FCC journey yesterday. Obviously with my unhealthy interest in CIS I was too busy listening to Funkwerk Phil at City and St Pancras to really care too much about anything else...

I said several months ago these split services would be interesting for the CIS and I have to say now the time has come they're certainly more interesting than I thought!

I was on a Brighton to Bedford service and on arrival at City instantly heard 'The train now approaching platform 1 is the 12:56 service to', without 'First Capital Connect' mentioned at all which I thought was extremely odd! It got odder when a minute later he piped up 'The train now approaching platform 2 is the 12:57 service to Wimbledon'... At this point I presumed FCC had given up with operators in their announcements altogether for some reason.

Got to STP and again 'The train now approaching platform B is the 13:04 service to', before going up the escalators to hear something which threw me quite a bit: 'We're sorry to announce that the 13:14 SouthEastern service to Kentish Town is delayed. SouthEastern are sorry for any inconvenience caused'.

Of all the things I expected to hear that was the last... especially after assuming operators had been done away with! I'm not sure if SouthEastern was mentioned solely as a filler for the announcement (obviously an operator is required for the second part of the announcement 'xxx are sorry' unless there is a 'We are sorry'?) or if the service is set up to be announced as a SE service too (i.e. 'The train now appraoching platform B is the 13:14 SouthEastern service to Kentish Town'), being the initial operator?

One thing is certain though - Funkwerk don't do a 'calling at' bit in the announcement if there is only one more stop for the train. Whether this is an option or if it is programmed is another matter. I thought it was odd at first (especially with Ditra saying 'Calling at xxx only').

Anyways enough of my warblings but I have a few questions for core based staff (probably aimed at mackenzie_blu more than anyone else as he has first hand experience of the system for hours on end!):
- On normal 'The train now approaching' announcements are operators mentioned on any services at all now?
- If so, are they specific services or are they sparodic in a sense?
- If not, I'm guessing hearing 'SouthEastern' is rather rare then? (As well as 'First Capital Connect' now - something I think should be rectified for all bar the Kent services!).
- If a Kent service from Kentish Town (haha indeed! Wonder if that was planned?) is delayed is it announced as 'First Capital Connect service to xxx is delayed' - i.e. using the initial operator of the service in the announcement as opposed to the 'main' or 'current' operator of the service?

Thanks in advance :)

Have a look at the picture below. It is not a 377 cab but almost identical. The two buttons above the screen on it's own on the left, the two red ones, one on top of the other, they are the DC select and the AC select buttons.

I wonder why they won't allow 501 and 504 out together as 501 looks horrible attached to a southern unit, just looks ridiculous!! :D

Speaking of GPS problems, why on earth were Barbican and Moorgate displayed on the PIS screen? :???:

Ah! It says you can change to Underground services for Barbican and Moorgate - not that it was stopping there. Not sure what the hell the extra text stuck at the end means though ("Sout48Kv")!

And, having Electrostar showing up so frequently is probably going to confuse people too!

Re rail company announcements on FCC, why not change to 'Sorry trains apologise for the late running of....'?

Until 504 finishes accumulates enough mileage (soon I expect) that won't happen. And while I'm at it, it'll probably be at least a month before another /5 is brought into service based on previous mileage runs, assuming that a release from Derby is scheduled within a week.

I'll deal with this one first, well it seems 504 has done enough milage as they keept expecting it to come into service but it never does. Not heard a peep out of anyone about this unit. I am enqiuring as usual tho!

Well the annoucement system in the core is very screwed up to be honest! The operator of a service should be announced but bare in mind the system wasn't completed in time so there is a fair few errors that we are working through. It wasn't just the rolling stock thats caused problems with KO0.

At Blackfriars Funwerk doesn't do any announcing at all due to a fault. There is a new system coming with the rebuilding of the station. The current system is a mash of older one with manual annoucements mixed in as certain services are in there but Beckenham Junction and bromley south only are examples of ones that aren't I think. Hell the other month I programmed it to say a Southeastern service was delayed and it came out with the "service to Sevenoaks is delayed due to Stanstead Express". Stanstead Express is not an opition to use to select so who knows whats up with that!?!?!?! The system is programmed to allow Southeastern to be used as an operator there due to having terimators there.

City Thameslink system is controlled by a computer which staff can't override, infact the system overides all manual announcements causing choas when it says sorry for minor delays endlessly when your trying to let customers know why there's no trains. A major fault.

Farringdon's is like City's, controlled elsewhere.

West Hampstead SDC can rewrite City and Farringdon's announcements.

I believe St Pancras calls them Southeastern services if they come from Sevenoaks etc but calls them FCC going south. Have to check that one out but remember the system there is different to every other station as FCC has no control over it as its all NR station. We just stand around talking to customers there.

Personally I've found at City that all the services that used to be Southeastern's are announced as such. But as you pointed out Ive spent many hours with the system and now tune it out!

**question**

Does anyone actually think a 4 car model of a 377/5 in FCC colours is better than Southern's?

The train definitely looks better in the blue, and when it gets the rest of the FCC branding (assuming it is?) then it will look better still. I'm sure these trains would look great with First colours inside too.

Anyway, I wonder if some has re-recorded the samples for the stations/TOCs etc and it's all stored in one large file - but the data hasn't been amended so what the software is expecting to say "Southeastern" is a recording of "Stansted Express"? It has to be something like that.

With the advances in text-to-speech, which is used quite well at King's Cross for the tube (and by TomTom for their SatNavs), I would hope that in the future we'll ditch the samples for computer generated voices. Then you can make a system say what it likes, which will mean being able to give more detailed information and not having to use pre-formed messages selected from a drop-down box (and the inevitable problems when people select multiple things to patch together, making no real sense at all).

And at City Thameslink the other day, they were apologising for the fact the screens were insisting the Sevenoaks train was going to arrive on the northbound platform. Manual announcements were being made every 30 seconds or so to warn people to ignore the screen, so they wouldn't miss the train when it did arrive on the right platform.

As I don't use the station a lot, do (did) trains terminate there and start back from the 'wrong' platform, or do they carry on out of the station and cross over to come back on the 'right' platform?

:) Indeed, I knew you'd be able to help ;). Thanks!

Oh deary me... Was fine before! I don't understand why the FCC only services were messed about on the system (unless you have to start again from fresh when putting new services in?). Always used to say 'is the xx: xx First Capital Connect service to', and now... nothing operator wise at all.

I said it from the off when I heard Funkwerk at the TL North stations - Ditra was much better. I will have to see if Bedford's can do 'London Midland' and 'Kempston Hardwick' yet... seems to me an oversight in the script given to Phil to record. Maybe that's why it was surprising for him to do SouthEastern the other day (the only purpose that had in the system last week was 2/3 services a day starting at City seeing as Blackfriars has retained its Ditra, and also at Elephant & Castle).

Stanstead Express is not an opition to use to select so who knows whats up with that!?!?!?! The system is programmed to allow Southeastern to be used as an operator there due to having terimators there.

So there is a Funkwerk system in situ there then? :( The Ditra was alive on Tuesday with Phil doing his famous cases announcement there. Seems like its days could be numbered then. The Blackfriars Ditra has been plagued with faults though and it chops the first second or so off each announcement. There were recently new speakers put up on platform 5 though.

I would have thought FCC would have taken the initiative from the GN side and installed the newer version of Ditra on Thameslink to only have one system to maintain... Evidently not.

City Thameslink system is controlled by a computer which staff can't override, infact the system overides all manual announcements causing choas when it says sorry for minor delays endlessly when your trying to let customers know why there's no trains. A major fault.

Farringdon's is like City's, controlled elsewhere.

Ah so delay announcements are played automatically then and not triggered manually... interesting! I assume that along with the newer version of Ditra, Funkwerk is connected to TRUST and gets its information from there.

West Hampstead SDC can rewrite City and Farringdon's announcements.

Now that is odd, I would have thought that they'd control the whole lot rather than the odd two stations :?

I believe St Pancras calls them Southeastern services if they come from Sevenoaks etc but calls them FCC going south. Have to check that one out but remember the system there is different to every other station as FCC has no control over it as its all NR station. We just stand around talking to customers there.

Ahh, thought so - original operator it is then (I believe it is on TRUST like that too as it cannot cope with an operator changeover at Blackfriars!).

I assume NR got Funkwerk Phil at St Pancras to fit in with what was going on elsewhere on the line... after all, that was the location of the first system.

Going slightly off topic, I think operators must have some control to what CIS they would like at their London terminal. NR seem to have a thing for the SEMA system (I think now produced by ATOS Origin), used at the likes of Charing Cross, Liverpool Street, London Bridge etc, but the new system at Waterloo was a Ditra, which SWT must have wanted to fit in with the rest of their network.

Personally I've found at City that all the services that used to be Southeastern's are announced as such. But as you pointed out Ive spent many hours with the system and now tune it out!

Ah, so they've remained untouched and the Sutton Loop and Brighton services have been messed around... (unless the 'First Capital Connect' sound file has disappeared off the system!!). I'm hoping it's only a temporary problem and that things'll be reconfigured soon.

Why are there two 'cases and parcels' warnings (or more)? We've got the 'unattended articles may be removed without warning' and others saying they may be destroyed. Oh, and then there's the 'security forces' one too - as if some navy seals will come in and blow up anything suspicious (as against a PSCO getting on his/her radio and asking what they're supposed to do).

Considering the usual advice is to leave unattended items alone, I'm surprised any announcement would say they'd be removed without warning. By who? These announcements seem to be at stations where staff wouldn't go near them - so the 'removed without warning' suggests they'd simply be nicked!!

I see Network Rail are using the old Thameslink screens at Potters Bar, which are awfully hard to read (I think the amber LEDs are fading extremely badly, as it's obviously a very old screen when LED technology still hadn't fully matured). They're also showing text that is too big to fit on the display, such that this morning it was saying

".....Knebworth due"
"a fatality...."

Now, I'm not sure Knebworth was actually due a fatality, but they got one so this must make the CIS psychic.. I hope it's showing Saturday's Lottery numbers tomorrow!

Blackfriars originally had Funkwerk when the system was rolled out however it was riddled with errors and quickly turned off. Ditra is only in situ as a backup and the system is not maintained as FCC no longer have a contract with Ditra which is why there are so many gaps in the timetable as it is now very old indeed!.

Loughborough Junction also has SET services which is also played through CIS.

So there is a Funkwerk system in situ there then? The Ditra was alive on Tuesday with Phil doing his famous cases announcement there. Seems like its days could be numbered then. The Blackfriars Ditra has been plagued with faults though and it chops the first second or so off each announcement. There were recently new speakers put up on platform 5 though.

Funkwerk has always been at Blackfriars but it has never worked properly. The reason why Ditra is currently so rubbish is it has had no timetable updates for quite sometime as FCC have no service agreement with Ditra and most of the times have changed. Ditra has always had a variety of faults since it replaced the reliable tape recordings and many of the announcements have never worked.

Ah so delay announcements are played automatically then and not triggered manually... interesting! I assume that along with the newer version of Ditra, Funkwerk is connected to TRUST and gets its information from there.

Funkwerk is fully automatic and shouldn't need any intervention from the stations. The Funkwerk terminal at Blackfriars was being used to control the screens only due to a wide number of faults including trains not being allocated platforms and the continual platform alterations which still plague Elephant & Castle.

Funkwerk may be completely automantic but intervension is needed on an hourly basis in my experience as the system still have various faults within it. Funkwerk can make all the announcements but for a safety issue the announcements have been disabled. Although its likely to end up with a system familar to City and Farringdon when finished in 2012. Not good at all.

I f I remember right the ditra timetable is working on something like the 2007 timetable so you have to manual wipe out the time!

:) Oh deary me... Was fine before! I don't understand why the FCC only services were messed about on the system (unless you have to start again from fresh when putting new services in?). Always used to say 'is the xx: xx First Capital Connect service to', and now... nothing operator wise at all.

I would have thought FCC would have taken the initiative from the GN side and installed the newer version of Ditra on Thameslink to only have one system to maintain... Evidently not.

Ah so delay announcements are played automatically then and not triggered manually... interesting! I assume that along with the newer version of Ditra, Funkwerk is connected to TRUST and gets its information from there.

Now that is odd, I would have thought that they'd control the whole lot rather than the odd two stations :?

Ahh, thought so - original operator it is then (I believe it is on TRUST like that too as it cannot cope with an operator changeover at Blackfriars!).

I assume NR got Funkwerk Phil at St Pancras to fit in with what was going on elsewhere on the line... after all, that was the location of the first system.

Ah, so they've remained untouched and the Sutton Loop and Brighton services have been messed around... (unless the 'First Capital Connect' sound file has disappeared off the system!!). I'm hoping it's only a temporary problem and that things'll be reconfigured soon.

SDC do control more than two odd stations but Im just talking about St Pancras to Blackfriars. At Blackfriars they control the Funwerk but that can also be edited by station staff unlike all other core stations. City and Farringdon are the only two which are fully automantic and FCC run. St Pancras to be honest Im not sure on whats used as Ive never been in the NR control room there.

The new speakers on platform 5 are to do with the recabling of the platform as it moves across the river. It still doesn't play manual announcements that well. Least now at Blackfriars we have offical announcers so we should be getting a better service in that sense.

FCC dont run any stations on the Brighton line and only a few stations on the loop. Ive done announcements for the loop and that system is very old. Its record an announcement then select ot from a drop down box and then select your stations before it asks you if you really want to send the annoucements and the then tell you its sent it. Complex and near useless when P2 is up the wall because you can't do anything.

The TL sides information system is about to be rolled out to the GN side soon. I know its the boards but can't for the life of me remember if its the announcing system too.

I was just about to mention that the entire* GN side of FCC is Ditra until I read that second part... so if they really don't have a contract with Ditra any more then Funkwerk is moving to GN too...

So FCC are getting rid of Ditra as FGW are installing more Ditra... hmmm!

Still, if you've heard the yet-to-be-properly-calibrated** Northern Funkwerk system you'll see why I'm so against it compared to Ditra!

* Well stations operated by FCC on the GN side (except Drayton Park - Essex Road AFAIK).
**At least I hope it is yet-to-be-properly-calibrated! If I was Northern's CIS manager I'd be wanting that sorted out as a matter of urgency!

Funkwerk has always been at Blackfriars but it has never worked properly. The reason why Ditra is currently so rubbish is it has had no timetable updates for quite sometime as FCC have no service agreement with Ditra and most of the times have changed. Ah thanks for that! I remember you saying ages ago that BFR's Ditra was riddled with problems (especially platform 5!). Would I be right in saying only one system can be connected at once though? Would explain the few times there's been nothing out the PA there whilst they've switched them around.

So based on what you say am I right in thinking that Ditra are the ones who reprogram the announcements? I thought that was down to TOCs themselves :? I read elsewhere that part of SWTs training was to set up a train on Ditra and then cancel it to show them how to do it! Seems like an awful lot of work for Ditra to do having to sort out five franchises worth of announcements as well as the systems at Victoria and Waterloo East!

So Funkwerk handles much more than the announcements then? This gets more interesting... If the GN side is getting new CIS then because of incompatibilities between the Ditra system and some types of screen then I guess it will be going then.

I have to agree that cutting out a manual announcement is very very bad news and something that should be fixed as a matter of priority especially with City and St Pancras being underground and needing a whole lot of extra safety arrangements.

Can just imagine it now with the staff trying to co-ordinate an evacuation:
'Attention please ladies and gentlemen, could you' 'We're sorry to announce that the 12:26 First Capital Connect service to Bedford is delayed'. That can prove very dangerous indeed.

I f I remember right the ditra timetable is working on something like the 2007 timetable so you have to manual wipe out the time!

 the system really shouldn't even be in use then! Surely the actual service announcements are there to tell people:
- Which platform
- Which time (people often make travel plans solely by times)
- Which operator
- Which destination
- Which calling pattern

SDC do control more than two odd stations but Im just talking about St Pancras to Blackfriars. At Blackfriars they control the Funwerk but that can also be edited by station staff unlike all other core stations. City and Farringdon are the only two which are fully automantic and FCC run. Ah gotcha. Also seems very odd that some stations have no manual control either whereas others do. To what extent do staff have control over the system (i.e. can it be switched off, interrupted, timetables edited?). The old TL Ditras were all of the older version and required everything to be triggered manually. I guess then that with Funkwerk at the likes of Farringdon and City that the non-service announcements (e.g. unattended luggage, CCTV, and smoking mainly) play automatically every x minutes.

Indeed, I meant about announcements in the core on those routes having no operator mentioned. I'm sure I read somewhere that with CIS if the facility exists to display/announce the operator of the service then it must be used. I can understand it not having an operator for the joint FCC and SE services but for the FCC only services?

As far as I'm aware there haven't been any retimings (that I've noticed) on the Bedford to Brighton and Luton/St Albans to Sutton/Wimbledon services so why would they have been touched in the CIS and had the operator of the service removed from the announcements? Seems to me FCC and Funkwerk have a lot of work to do sorting the system out properly!

As an aside, something that really bothers me about Funkwerk is the delays it churns out. Is it an option in the system to not announce the length and reason of delay if it's under 10 minutes or is it programmed like that?

If I wasn't as interested in the systems as I am I would be unaware that it does start giving lengths after 10 minutes. Surely that's discriminatory for those with visual impairments using the train for the first time? 'We're sorry to announce that the 12:26 First Capital Connect service to Bedford is delayed' really doesn't tell them all that much and it's not as if they would be able to see the expected time on the board.

I never realised how disorganised things like this could be, when providing information shouldn't be that difficult.

I know things may have to be built to work with legacy systems, but how can it be such a mess and allowed to continue in this state for such a long time?

Isn't a proper CIS vital, and required particularly for blind/partially sighted and deaf people? It seems that nobody 'high up' is that bothered if it's partially accurate or doesn't really work as intended.

What's particularly bad is when things go wrong, and the information screens become even more important (especially to people who already know the timetable and how to identify their train). Time after time on the GN side, the screens end up showing totally wrong information when things to tits up, such that they're occasionally turned off completely!

And we all know how well the National Rail website copes when we have bad weather! Websites that offer 'mission critical' data being hosted by sites that will not cope with a heavy loads.

Depends on the system in use.

Ditra (at Blackfriars) will say: 'Please do not leave cases or parcels unattended anywhere on the station. Any unattended articles are likely to be removed without warning'. I think that comes from the days when unattended luggage wasn't seen as too suspicious and would just be moved to lost property.

Funkwerk (elsewhere at FCC-TL managed stations): 'Please do not leave luggage or personal belongings unattended. Any unattended items will be removed and may be destroyed or damaged by security forces'. Recorded a couple of years ago now general practice is to close the station and get a 'bomb squad' to attend the scene.

Exactly - not many people seem to be aware about the differences in the systems and what they can do. The Ditras in use on FCC-GN, FGW, SWT, Southern, and at Birmingham New Street are of the newer version than that at Blackfriars and those still in use with Northern. To be honest with you I'm not exactly sure what the newer version *cannot* do!

I'd like to see Funkwerk deal with a split (not that it's needed at present). It's bad enough only approaching announcements are used. If a service was to split then people are going to need enough time to move to the correct part of the platform. In the core, approacing announcements now play when the train is almost stationary.

Ditra can also be completely automatic (as it is on SWT and Southern where both these systems hold every sound file recorded for Ditra). Advance announcements are played at least 2 minutes before departure time (sooner if the train is arriving early), approaching announcements when the train is about 30 seconds away, and a further announcement when the train is standing in the platform.

There is a reason Ditra is more expensive than Funkwerk... Phil records new stuff for Ditra every 3 months to make the system as up-to-date and versatile as possible! I wonder how often FCC and Northern will get new clips off of him for Funkwerk. (The systems are very different and as such I don't think Funkwerk seem all that bothered about a standard configuration).

I'm only glad it was agreed that Phil was deemed to be better so his voice used. TPE, on the other hand, removed Phil for someone really bad!

I know things may have to be built to work with legacy systems, but how can it be such a mess and allowed to continue in this state for such a long time?

Very true indeed. I'd have thought such systems would be set up, calibrated, configured, and staff trained to use them properly before they went into use... It would seem so that management aren't bothered about what system they have nor its effectiveness as long as they have one... even if it is totally rubbish and does not do its job properly.

On 2nd February after the heavy snowfall, SWT turned their screens to a advisory message rather than giving information out. On the other hand the Ditra was coping very well with the brunt of what was going on, and giving out excellent information (something I doubt FCCs Funkwerk would be able to do). Admittedly that was again discriminatory towards those with hearing impairments but at least an effort was made.

FCC should take a leaf out of SWT and Southerns' books regarding CIS. They have made the effort to work with Ditra to make the system fit for its purpose and as such it is reliable and provides the correct information as necessary. From what I've experienced, nothing seems to go majorly wrong with their systems* because they have been developed so well.

*Admittedly, some do have some RAM problems (particularly Clapham Junction which I highlighted last year), which causes announcements to stutter or loop, but that can be easily rectified I think with... some more RAM!

(I apologise for dragging this thread off topic slightly - I'll keep an eye on things and see whether it is worth splitting this CIS discussion into another!).
