God im confused why does it need to be so complicated
It isn't really.

If there are facilities to sell you a ticket using your chosen valid payment method, then you must use them, unless there are notices or publications saying you can buy on board.

If you do not use them, and it was deemed that you made a mistake or were in a rush etc, then you can be charged the full fare or, if you encounter an authorised person under the relevant circumstances, a Penalty Fare. However the train company may, depending on the circumstances, choose not to issue any fare and instead prosecute you.

Yeah, atleast I have x10 more knowledge on fares now.

Oh and does anyone know how long you get to pay a private settlement?

Lets assume the ticket machine wasn't working, that is not your fault. However, if there was an open booking office and you walked past it then getting an out of court settlement is your best option here. It is promising that the person you spoke to on the phone has already suggested that such a settlement likely to be offered.

It is important that in future you do not walk past an open booking office or working ticket machine. There is a possibility that the train company may right to you offering a settlement figure without the need for you to have to even give your side of the story.

If however they do, as a matter of course, write and ask for such, I do wonder how much weight the ticket machine not working (and hence the longer line at the booking office) will offer in terms of strength of mitigation? I would still however applogise and offer to pay their costs plus the fare. However, lets see what happens.

I have mentioned the ticket machine and longer wait at the office. However I've still apologised and offered to pay a private settlement covering the cost of the fair and administration.

Many thanks

If that's £92.70 then it's the single Anytime fare plus £75. Pretty standard for AGA.

Correct, im glad it's been sorted like this. Huge stress taken off me now, paying it tomorrow. Thanks for all the help and advice guys
