MEMBERS OF Britain’s biggest rail union at two major commuter train-operating companies are to strike for 24 hours next Monday (March 30) in separate disputes over jobs.

Around 1,500 RMT members at First Capital Connect and National Express East Anglia will not book on for shifts scheduled to start between 00:01 and 23:59 on Monday March 30 after the two companies failed to withdraw job cuts or guarantee no compulsory redundancies......

The strikes at FCC and National Express East Anglia will coincide with the second day of a 48-hour stoppage by around 100 conductors at London Midland’s Bletchley, Northampton and Watford depots in a separate dispute over Sunday working
source rmt

same day as a 48 hour stopage at LM

Why should managment be allowed to treat staff as disposable items. the unions are fighting to save peoples jobs and the publics train services. OK timming could be better but we should be supporting them not attacking them.
How would you feel if sudenly your job and income were removed. Managment will look to secure the profit of the company, it is the unions who look after staff .
Look back in history and you will find that most of employees improvements are the result of trade unions.

Why should management be forced to employ unnecessary staff who need to be paid for by passengers in the ticket price? Why should I be unable to get to work?

Management should be required to offer as much help and support as they can, but I don't think they should have any obligation to provide jobs just because they do at the moment.

Excuse me?

Im interested to hear why you think he needs to grow up.

Because as the name states he is "Gordon the Moron" if the shoe fits I say.

Any who I guess if the staff feel this is the only way forward then so be it personally I think strikes are bad ideas as they create Ill-feeling between staff and the men upstairs that does the staff no favors in the long term but good luck to them anyhow.

Doesn`t sound much like a normal service to me
Interesting that FCC does not think IT will run a reduced service....is this due to no information to post on this company, or that Driver Only Operation means very little effect on services, maybe more on ticket revenue sales and clean stations

The Railway Mutant Turtles are doing exactly what their members pay their money for, representing the membership. A call for strike action is normally the last line of action, not the first. Not being able to get to work isn`t caused by greedy staff in this case but by greedy management trying to maximise the (getting tighter ) profit margin to get a bigger bonus <D

FCC train drivers on the Thameslink side are almost certainly completely ASLEF. Ticket office/station staff that are in a union are likely split between RMT and TSSA, and RPIs were hardly ever seen when I worked down there! Whilst I wish them all the luck in trying to save jobs, I don't think the FCC strike will have much effect.

And in what way are the staff who's jobs are being cut more "unnecessary" than your own? It isn't that they are unnecessary, it is that them upstairs are trying to cut costs in any way possible.
Shame SWT voted against strike action; potentially giving the management to do what they like. LM, NXEA, FCC and SWT all striking on the same day would have sent something of a message to railway management.

I was reading last night, though was unable to substantiate if it was true, that Network Rail have 12 layers of management. Normally its considered the less the better, with 5 being the optimum amount for a medium/large company.

So it seems to me the railways do need a large cull of administrators and management to make them more efficient and to get the prices down, this is where most of the money goes, not on new track and trains.

Are there any details yet on what effect there'll be on London Midland services? I was planning a day out in London (from Coventry) on that Monday - I'd hate for it to go up the Swannee... <(

The strike will not alter London Midland services. Cos LM services are crap anyway!

Well, it made me laugh....

If you think that a big cull of staff will result in cheaper fares then you are truely living on another planet my friend.
The savings will only go straight into the back pockets of the fatcats at the top.
Service and safety come a poor second to profit.

Best of luck to the RMT.
I have my doubts about this course of action, and think it will serve only to mark people out for redundancy or dismissal, but i hope i'm wrong.

Strike Suspended...

Strike Suspended..

STRIKE ACTION by members of Britain’s biggest rail union at two major commuter train-operating companies has been suspended to allow further talks to take place on jobs and future staffing, and for consultation with members on progress made.

Around 1,500 RMT members had been due to strike on Monday in separate disputes at First Capital Connect and National Express East Anglia.

“We have been in intensive talks today with both National Express and First Capital Connect, and significant progress has been made – not least that there have been no compulsory redundancies at either company,” RMT general secretary Bob Crow said today.

“There is no doubt that the determination of RMT members and their decisive votes for strike action have played a major role in the progress we have made.

“First Capital Connect has modified proposals on booking office closures, including a reduction in the number of staff to be displaced, and a commitment that all displaced booking office staff will be retained.

“At National Express East Anglia there has also been significant progress made in discussions on reducing the use of agency and contract labour.

“In the light of these developments the RMT executive has today suspended the action scheduled for Monday at both companies in order to allow talks to continue and to consult with our members on the proposals made,” Bob Crow said.

As an active member of ASLEF for 29 years before moving away I fully understand who the unions represent, the same is probably true of FCC GN services, NXEA and most TOC`s but I appreciate the thought thank you.
