Heathrow- Castle Cary , acceptable routes

Hi all,
I am arriving at LHR T4 at 7pm on 22nd June, and need to get to Castle Cary that evening.

I am looking at the Heathrow Express to Paddington then on to Castle Cary - but the last Cary train is 20:35
The connections are very, very tight!

If I miss the 20:35 PAD-CLC train can I use an alternative route to get near Castle Cary? (There's later trains to Yeovil and I could get a lift from there to Castle Cary)

I was looking at 'off peak single' as it says 'any permitted route' but have got myself completely confused looking at the maps and operators; or indeed whether you are allowed just to get near your desired station if you've missed the last train of the night!

Unless you are trying to use an Advance (Booked Train Only) ticket, then there is no advantage to booking in advance, except saving a couple of minutes - simply buy the ticket to your actual destination (whether Castle Cary or Yeovil or....) at Heathrow.

Sorry, a ticket to Castle Cary is unlikely to be valid to Yeovil as it's a completely different route.

In view of the tight timings you might be better off aiming for Waterloo (or Woking) to Yeovil, though for some obscure reason the bargain £13 fare isnt available on your date.

Its not that obscure really - it happens to be the date of Britains biggest festival so im pretty sure they want to maximise revenue from that.

Have you considered the Rail-Air bus link from Heathrow to Reading (for Castle Cary) or Woking (for Yeovil Junction)?

To research the times and fares, use the National Rail Journey Planner with Heathrow Bus as the starting point.

It looks as though you could leave Heathrow Central Bus Station at 19:40 for Reading, thence train to Castle Cary (arr 22:14), or at 19:40, 20:40 or 23:15 for Woking, thence train to Yeovil Junction (arr 22:55, 23:48 or 01:57).

Last train-only journey to Castle Cary appears to be 19:57, arr 22:14 (via Paddington).

I haven't checked fares, but for what it may be worth it is probably cheaper to use the bus link than to go via London.

As you say, the last Castle Cary options are in any case very tight.

There's a non-stop coach from Heathrow to Reading station where almost every train to the west will stop and certainly those stopping at Castle Cary.

There again that may still not be in time to make the connection with the last train. (leaves Reading at 21:02)

There's a later combination of trains the first leaving Reading at 21:42 which can get you to Frome after midnight via Bath. That's about the same distance from Castle Cary as Yeovil, but it's on the route to Castle Cary, so a ticket not linked to a specific train would be valid.
