Why is it cheaper from Beeston to Newark Castle for an off Peak Return?
Since privatisation some train companies have been attempting to put up the price of travel as much as they can get away with, in order to increase revenue (the assumption appears to be that passengers will
generally pay whatever the TOC asks for!)
Often that means concentrating on flows that are lucrative for whatever reason.
Sometimes they forget about longer distance journeys that are valid to start and/or finish short in order to make the 'lucrative' journey at a lower price.
The fact that some fares rise more than others leads to anomalies. With some exceptions, the train companies generally think that the fares they have artificially risen to ludicrous levels should remain high and will therefore often attempt to increase any cheaper fares that they subsequently discover are undercutting the higher fares.
Some companies are fussed about anomalies and try to 'fix' them (often by increasing cheaper fares, and potentially causing even more anomalies further down the line) while others just seem to accept that anomalies will always exist.
In this case it's only 10p. I suspect EMT will either not bother to fix it, or they will put the cheaper fare up.
There are some examples of fares going
down when an anomaly is exposed, but these are relatively uncommon.
