Outward travel- to arrive Shrewsbury between 10.30 and 12.00

Return same day leaving Shrewbury betwee 18.00 and 19.30

3 adults no rail cards.

Max 2 hours travelling preferred.

Any suggestion for cheap tickets, split tickets or creative but valid routings much appreciated.

Thanks,

Premier01

Raileasy suggests splits at Wigan and Nantwich, changing at Crewe for 95.70 for all 3 on flexible tickets. This would be comfortably under the 2hr limit on the way out but the connection at Crewe is less good on the way back 2hr2m.

Preston - Wigan return £5.90 (Virgin only)
Wigan - Nantwich return £13.30
Nantwich - Shrewsbury return £9.90 (ATW group discount), or £11.30 otherwise

Total £30.50 x3 = £91.50 (available online), or
£29.10 x3 = £87.30 with SGD tickets (not available online)

would be valid on the following, and all journeys that day which call at Nantwich and Wigan. These are flexible tickets and even if a seat reservation is issued, are valid all day and are not restricted to any particular train, although Virgin must be used for part of the journey, as detailed above.

1017 Preston - Crewe 1057
1108 Crewe - Shrewsbury 1137

and

1855 Shrewsbury - Crewe 1926
2009 Crewe - Preston 2057

Alternatively, a Two Together Railcard costs £27, is good for one year, and would save £21 on this journey alone, so would be a worthy investment.

Thank you for replies. The SGD ticket looks like a good plan..can this be purchased from any station- likely for us it will be Preston?

The 2 together rail card is a good suggestion but wouldn't be used again by the same 3 adults...Mrs. Premier01 and I have one and they are worthwile but this group will only be travelling on a one off trip.

Yes, Preston can issue these tickets. If you purchase everything in one go from the station they'll be able to issue seat reservations; eg putting all three passengers at the same table for the through journey.
