Have all of the Riviera Mk1s now moved to Eastleigh?

Most of Rivieras stock seems to be concentrated on two sites now. Most of the Mk2s now reside up at Burton when not in use by the TOCs for Charter purposes, while the Mk1s have moved across Campbell Road and into the Works (ZG) rather than the Arriva Traincare / LNWR / ex EWS depot.

Also, editing out the graffiti may help.

There isn't any graffiti to edit out.

This can be done in just a few seconds using a website such as Postimage; choose an appropriate size and you can upload it there. Then no need to attach here; just post a hyperlink.

I've done it now anyway; these are from April 24th.

...Daring to stray back on topic ;), the video clip with the GBRF locos on it show some chocolate and cream mk1s but they look to be in fairly good nick. Are those the ones we're talking about?

Yes, they're the ones we're talking about (or at least some of them) - they're a few rows deep at that point and some aren't in as "good" condition as these.

...I've done it now anyway; these are from April 24th.

The ones that were there last week in my video are the same ones in Peter's photos from April.

I pass Carnforth regularly and Crewe from time to time, Hellifield but occasionally. Is there much prospect of any of these vehicles proving of any use at all? Ever? Even for spares? They project an awful image of the railways.

There are some at Willesden too, I doubt they've moved since Royal Mail services stopped over 10 years ago.

The ones at Hellifield turned up two or three years ago. I think someone may have them in line for spares.

Thanks - although there are a significant number of Riviera Mk1s at Eastleigh (maybe they're all in for cosmetic attention!).

I'm led to believe that was one of the bigger plus points of the move for Riviera, basing their Mk1 rakes out of Eastleigh Works as apposed to the Depot has allowed them to access much better facilities for maintenance and overhaul - as you can see by both Carl Watsons pictures and the recently repainted Mk1s in Riviera's charter rakes.

So many heritage railways could do with those Mk1s rather than letting them rot

Possibly but, Can some of those Heritage Railways afford the facilities to overhaul them? The other problem of course is that many of those Mk1s will more than likely be Air Braked - most pres railways are Vac only.

Incidentally, the two named Mk1 FOs in the pictures above are ex Pres having both arrived from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. They are part of the many Mk1s stored and owned by Jeremy Hoskins Locomotive Services Limited at Crewe. They will ultimately be used to form their own charter rakes, with some of the Mk1s & Mk2s having already been refurbished and repainted.

There used to be the Class 151 units there that were vandalised and later scrapped on site in 2004.

Many of the trains have been there for many many years and haven't moved and I don't think they will see service again. I remember seeing quite a lot of Anglia Railways stock with I think would have been left there after the Class 90s and Mark 3 coaches were moved to 'one' as it was then known.

I think a couple of years ago Pete Waterman had something to do with it but I don't know if thats still the case.

Most it not all of his stock is now up there. His former LNWR business is now in the hands of Arriva though, and I believe now renamed.

Certainly the depot on the right (East) as you approach Crewe from the South (i.e. opposite side to the 'decaying trains' sidings we're talking about) was renamed a while back to "Arriva Traincare" from LNWR - usually a couple of smart Arriva 08s there, plus various interesting things such as Network Rail test trains (including NMT sometimes), stabled DRS nuclear flask trains and the Northern Belle stock used to be there quite a bit (although not seen it for a while). None of that is decaying, though, so off topic... ;)

Belmond has recently awarded a 10-year maintenance contract to the SVR for the Northern Belle, hence why you've not seen it a Crewe for a while!

Thinking out loud here. Not all the preserved railways would need to change, in that if one or two did then their old coaches could then move to railways which were staying the same.

That's not to say that it is easy (or cheap) to change, rather that it could be in the interests of a lot of groups if a few were to change.

With Pete Waterman's LNWR company I remembered it had debts of £2 million when it was sold in 2008 which in the grand scheme of things isn't a lot but in the railways you need to be a big company to get anywhere.

I suppose with Crewe its partially that in the early 2000s there were a large amount of mark 2 coaches that operators didn't want and there was only so many coaches that private operators wanted.

Sorry, do you mean change from VB to AB?

If so, bear in mind that virtually ALL preserved steam locos would also require converting, which is a bit more complex.

Yes, sorry the change in breaking systems.

It would only require the change for the locos that used those lines that converted. For visiting locos there are two options, first create a "box" that interacts between the logo and coaches enabling them to work together or just have some of the wrong coaches for visiting locos.

For the latter those coaches could be used for other purposes, such as seating for static buffets when not in use.

Presumably the use of the newer breaking systems could allow the use of locos dragging EMU's (although there would need to be changes to allow the power to the lighting without running through the main power grid).
