Thursday saw the 22000 class spread their wings to the former Dublin and South Eastern route with 22026 working the 0600 Gorey - Connolly. The railway has been closed between Bray and Gorey for the last couple of the weeks due to a rockfall at Bray Head and a landsip in Arklow. To celebrate the reopening IE decided to roster a 22000 onto the route to welcome customers back to the reopened rail route.

Pictures of 22026 at Connolly and Blackrock on the 0600 Gorey - Connolly now online at:

Evening folks,

Due to major engineering works at Limerick Junction and Charleville from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning there are no train services between Thurles and Mallow. The special timetable in place had additional services operating on the Limerick to Ballybrophy route so as to avoid Limerick passengers having to endure bus transfers on some services. Pleasantly these were booked to be operated by a 3 car 22000, unit 22002 becoming the first Intercity DMU to operate in passenger service on the route.

The following services operated over the branch line:

Special 1415 Limerick - Ballybrophy connecting into the 1548 Thurles - Heuston.

Special 1650 Ballybrophy - Limerick connecting out of the 1525 Heuston - Thurles.

Also the 1725 Heuston - Limerick was diverted to operate via Nenagh instead of the mainline route via Thurles.

Photos from the trip to Limerick and back are now online at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1655420.html

Enjoy,

Nice photos, good to see something from Ireland as well!

Just a pedantic note, the gallery titles should be "The Wanderings of the Week", there's no need for the apostrophe. :)

Evening folks,

There have been four updates to the site over the last two days:

The first is an update of the LUAS Extensions Gallery showing construction work of the LUAS Green Line extension from Sandyford to Cherrywood in South Dublin, including photos from Sandyford, Glencairn, Carrickmines, Tully and Cherrywood. Photos start half way down the page:
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1307425_25.html

The 2nd update is of the Luas Operations Gallery with two photos of 4005 at Sandyford:
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/p56957796.html
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/p56957798.html

The 3rd update is of the Bord na Mona narrow gauge peat railway system with a visit to the Ummeras system in Co. Kildare (near Monastervin). 3 locos (all Rustons?) are based on this small isolated system. On my visit two locos were visible, these being LM52 and LM83. One of the photos shows the rollercoaster ride that the track must give to the driver's of peat trains.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/p56956905.html
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/p56956906.html

The 4th and final update is of the weeks wanderings with photos of Push/Pull 6105 leading the 1130 Galway - Heuston non-stop express, 22017 on the 1210 Heuston - Galway non-stop express and the last photo of the week sees 219 arriving into Portarlington in charge of the 1530 Westport - Heuston with a MK3 rake.

Hi The Wanderer

Just thought I'd post here to say cheers for your ongoing updates, which I follow with interest! I was in and around Dublin at the weekend, travelled mostly on the Dart services but also one of the CAF 29000 class DMUs on a Drogheda service up the coast between Bray and Connolly. Impressed with both types of stock, though the feeling of the DMU was rather sparse inside, and the line speed was painfully slow!!

Impressed also by the look of the new Intercity DMUs (22000 class?) and also happened to see an Enterprise service departing Connolly for Belfast. Great noise and clag for a modern loco I thought, despite being GM-built like our 66s. Also passed the depot outside Heuston on a sightseeing bus and had a good view of old and new locos and coaches, including Mk 3s and the CAF Mk 4 stock. Obviously IE have spent a lot of money on new stock in recent years.

Finally on the way back to the airport through the port area we passed what I think was East Wall depot? I saw a orange flash above a wall which I realised when the view opened out was the end of the rake of International coaches which I recognised from this picture...

Anyway, good to see it all for real and will follow this thread closely in future. Thanks!

I wonder if any of the International or Mk 3 stock will ever end up back on British metals as suggested elsewhere on this forum?

Hi Royston Vasey,

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Dublin.

The 29000's are a high capacity commuter DMU. Creature comforts it hasn't got! I.E. have also used these on Dublin - Sligo services for a couple of years before the Intercity 22000's were introduced. I said it before and i'll say it again. The 22000's built by Rotem are the finest DMU to operate in Ireland and the UK. Quite, fast and comfortable.

The 201's on the Dublin - Belfast service use HEP (ETS for our UK friends) to power the coaches. This is the only service to use this function. All other coaching stock uses Generator Vans. This means the 201's even while standing still are screaming with the engine in (I think) notch 5 all the time.

A 201 on the Heuston side is a different machine :)

The Heuston VP (Depot) is on its last legs. I even worked there for a while. With the 22000's being introduced and the Cravens, MK2's and MK3's all being withdrawn the workload of the depot has been reduced to the bare bone. MK4 servicing has now transferred to Inchicore and once all the MK3 and MK3 Push / Pull stock is withdrawn Heuston VP will be closed.

Once the MK3's are gone the oldest passenger rolling stock in Ireland with date from 1983, these being the Class 8100 class EMU's used on the DART service. These have recently been refurbished by siemens. The 2nd oldest rolling stock will be the Class 2600 DMU's built by Tokyu Car Company, dating from 1993. Of note these were the first Japanese rolling stock to be built for the European market. Since then I.E. have ordered the Class 2800 DMU and the 8500, 8510 & 8520 family of EMU's from Tokyu. Tokyu also supplied bogies to Rotem for the 22000 Class using a modified bogie of the same type found on the Class 2800 DMU's.

The bus back to the airport must have gone via the Port Tunnel? The you would have passed East Wall Yard. There is currently 2 rakes of coaches stored here (8 MK3 and 8 Internationals.)

It's rumoured that some of the International rake has been sold. I've no idea of the buyers though.

Once again I hope you enjoyed the trip and come again soon!

Regards,
The Wanderer.

An excellent start to the week with a grice of the Weedspray train which operated from Limerick Jct to Portlaoise via the Nenagh line. The train only sprayed as far as Ballybrophy, the section between Ballybrophy and Portlaoise will be sprayed at a later date.

Managed to catch the train at several locations over the course of the day at Woodfarm, Birdhill, Cappadine, Cloghjordan, Borris-in-Ossory, Ballybrophy and Rosskelton.

Other stuff seen during the day included 088 on the 1015 Limerick - Waterford Cement near Killonan and 079 and 077 on the DFDS (Norfolk) liners at Portarlington.

Good to also catch up with several familiar faces over the course of the day.

Evening all,

Took a ramble between Newbridge and Portarlington today with the following trains photographed:

218 worked the 0925 Waterford - Heuston with 8 MK3.

212 returned the Cork based MKIII set to Cork after working an 0815 Cork - Heuston relief due to heavy demand from Cork and Kerry this morning.

234 worked the 1210 Heuston - Galway again with the 4 car Push / Pull set and 228 provided power for the 1130 Galway - Heuston with the 5 car Push / Pull.

222 failed at the Curragh with the 1400 Heuston - Cork and was rescued by 218, which hauled the failed train back to Newbridge for passengers to detrain and join the 1500 Heuston - Cork. After detraining 218 worked the train empty to Heuston.
