Hi - sorry I know I've been starting lots of threads recently and probably won't be able to stop any time soon! But does anyone know what the apparent difference is between the first class in SWT 159/0 and 159/1?

Thanks!:p

I think the 159/1s have a different type of seat recovered from somewhere else when they had 1st added after conversion from 158s. Someone else will be able to elaborate and/or correct me if I'm wrong.

Not anymore, they used to have ex-Anglia Class 170 seating in First Class, but after GWR reseated their trains in First Class, all SWT Class 159s now have the same seat in both standard and first. :)

Oh ok. I thought it could be Anglia. I also thought that the 159/0s had similar seats as Chiltern Business so the old FGW seats would make sense, being the same

Are these the original standard seats that we know and love ?

Yes, the excellent original seating, but sadly, as units are going through refurb they are being fitted with really hard cushions. :( rip

The original 158 seating is incredibly wasteful of space. It's amazing how much more spacious Grammer seated 158s like ATW's and EMT's are, and that's with a layout that actually crams in more seats than the original.

The seats themselves are comfortable, but legroom would only be acceptable if they had removed a bay i.e. 8 rather than 9 bays.

So after twenty years, this is South West Trains' parting gift. Rather than not using scarce diesel units on electric diagrams, they choose to vandalise their own assets. Good bye and get knotted.

The 159/1s First Class has slightly less legroom than the 159/0s. This can be seen from the fact they have 24 seats versus 23 in the 159/0s - the extra seat is on the single seat side and doesn't have a table but just a small "ledge" that holds a drink and a snack. The luggage rack on the two seat side is also wider than on the 159/0s.

Huh? What is the point you are making, i.e. what assets are being vandalised?

The comfortable passenger saloons. Extra leg room is of no value if the seats are inferior.

That rather depends on your height. The original 158 seats are indeed very comfortable, but the only place I can sit without problems is the "infinite legroom" seat by the wheelchair space or a table with nobody opposite.

If I could have a harder, even a solid wooden or plastic seat, with more legroom, I'd take it.

At least you have the Great Western and their hard seats as an alternative. I will have nothing.

Honestly, they're keeping the seat frames and everything else. What clown decided to change the cushioning, rather than just a good old re-upholster.

If the object of the journey was a journey, yes. Otherwise, I have whatever the train necessary to get to my destination is :)

You can bring a cushion, I can't cut my legs off!

Oh nonsense, we're all doing the journey to get somewhere. We all want a level of comfort in doing so. Sitting on a hard board for three hours does not fulfill that basic need.

If SWT were interested in your comfort, they could have removed a Row of seats and moved everything up.

Just what until first move the seats up and put an extra row in then!

Im thinking it will be a full reseating with new frames not just a jiggle about.

I'm on one right now in std - original seats thank god

Seriously sometimes I think I could run a train company better than some of the ones we have!

I don't know where all this moaning is coming from, the refurbished 159s and 158s still have exactly the same seats, just different padding. They're the same as the ones in the refurbished GWR and Northern units, not uncomfortable in my opinion at all. It does seem First may have different plans for the future though.

Blimey, it could be far far worse. Think yourselves lucky that they're not replacing the seats with GTR class 700 ironing board seats.

That would be something to complain about...

Ooh, charming! :D

The point here is that anyone could run a railway that is perfect for them or that is perfect but would cost millions or even billions due to the inefficiencies. The current model is that it's run for a profit which of course will lead to services/rolling stock that isn't perfect. But back to the topic in hand, swt diesels.
