Chiltern to remove on-board catering..

They've surely got to provide some sort of catering to make their business zone worth while. £25 extra is a lot to pay for 90 minutes in an open first if that's all you get.

I've always seen very healthy loads when leaving Marylebone of an evening. At the moment the only refreshment included in the price of the supplement is a cup of tea, &c. Many passengers don't even take this up, so I don't imagine that the majority of their 'business' travellers will be put off.

During the day the supplement is only £10 anyway, which is still a decent price even without a drink included in the fare.

Really is a shame to lose catering. Such things dumb the service down & make Virgin look so much more appealing than they already are. Considering Chiltern do so much in other quarters I struggle to understand why they cant take a hit & subsidise some form of on train catering on the busiest long distance services or maybe they are not that busy.

Do they really do much long distance stuff ? - I can't see the point of any catering on most trains, only the longest distance ones.

Can't agree with you there. From the outset as a teenager on Rovers in the 80s I was always drawn to trains with a buffet & nothing has changed. I almost always purchase onboard.

I'm not sure the longest distance ones are very good any more for catering, unless maybe if you are in 1st class. The East Coast trains have got rid of the restaurant car, which did do some nice food the one time I used it in the dim and distant past. Last time I got a train from Edinburgh to London the best I could manage was some sort of cheese and mushroom pastie thing which tasted like it had been mined and refined, rather than grown or raised.
