Whether they should exercise their authority in the way they do is a performance issue between them and their employer, nothing else.

The Cambrian Mainline has three stations with ticket offices, 2 un manned stations with Card Only TVM's and 2 unmanned stations with no facilities.

Arriva Trains Wales is making a habit so saying publicly that passengers should be the one's to seek out the guard. This practice of giving out incorrect information needs to stop. The passenger is quite entitled to board, take their seat and wait for the guard to come round.

They are certainly not providing any level of consistency - arguably worse than the already bad Northern at this.

If they want to go the way of TVMs and PFs with no on board sales, fine, all good[1], as is pay-on-board if they are OK risking revenue loss, but they can't have their cake and eat it.

[1] I'd say that like the urban Northern services, that is precisely what the entire of the Valley Lines should be.

In the day to day reality of ATW at least in this area, ther eis no problem at all at present with buying on board, even if the ticket office is open. I see it all the time in Llanelli. And absolutely no need to go looking for the guard.

I even did it myself last month, although I felt uncomfortable doing it.

TBH, I think the easiest and most consistent way is to have Paytrain lines, and Penalty Fares lines. In the former on-board purchase is always allowed and all stations are open, and presumption is that the guard does revenue protection[1] with additional inspectors provided when busy, and in the latter there is no on-board sales, and pre-purchase facilities are provided at all stations. Both should have very clear signage. Potentially even on the train itself, like the Swiss "eye" (I think the PF warning triangle is well known enough to use that).

[1] With some form of mechanism for proving travel if he can't, e.g. handing out pre-printed permission to travel cards when his TVM is broken or he thinks he won't get round everyone in time for arrival at a barriered station like Cardiff Central.

I agree with Penalty fare lines/stations and Paytrain ones. Certainly west of Offa's Dyke its simple Valley Lines, Abrgavenny/Chepstow/Swansea to Cardiff should all be PF lines everything else Paytrain.

Everyone knows where they are and its consistent.

I'd love to see how you could make the Valley Lines Penalty Fare lines when most stations do not have ticketing facilities!
