Jumping aboard a cruise which stops at Rome (Civitavecchia actually).
I note there is a fairly frequent service from Civitavecchia to Rome city centre (although we'll be getting off at San Pietro.

Here's some questions:

1) There is no way to use a FIP pass when booking online?

2) Can anyone tell me what is the standard price when buying a ticket on the day?

3) Thinking of using thetraline.eu and booking trains, although I don't know what time I will need to be back on the boat, nor what time it docks. I assume early as there's an excursion option, which leaves at 7:45am, so I would probably get trains around 8:15 out, 16:00 return.

I may have some other questions but I'll keep those to a separate thread.

Thank you :D

For the regional trains, I'm sure that you just buy them on the day and there's no benefit from booking in advance. It's €4.60 per person one way on the Regionale trains. I have no idea about your FIP.

It's very easy to buy your tickets on the day. The machines have an English option. As such, I wouldn't worry about buying in advance. Just buy your ticket and remember to stamp them in the (usually well hidden) boxes at the platform prior to use.

Thanks :)

I suspect there's no benefit to the FIP pass.

Are the tickets then valid for the whole route for the whole day?
I ask because we're also visiting Pisa and Florence. So if I got a ticket from the port (Livorno) to Florence, could I get off at Pisa? Or should I just get three singles (as we'd be going from Florence back to Livorno).

Not sure if they work the same as UK standard day tickets.

There are huge, slow queues at Civitavecchia station when the cruises arrive. Have your breakfast early!

When our cruise stopped at Livorno, we thought we'd be able to do Pisa and Florence in a day. In fact we just did Pisa: it's a fair walk from Livorno station to the ship and vv, then a bus journey to the tower, then the queues to go up it despite a booking system - but it really is worth it, I was surprisingly impressed. Then there's things to see around the tower and in Pisa itself.

When you say 'FIP pass' do you mean the FIP discount card, or a coupon with date boxes on it?

The FIP card gives you a 50% discount on FS trains, but you must buy your ticket from a station booking office before travel. It's some years since I last went to Italy so I'm not sure how widespread booking offices are these days, but I imagine large stations will have one.

No reservations, supplements or advance purchase fares on regional trains.

If you have a FIP coupon (and if you have a FIP card you should be entitled to one), just date a box and get on the train. Have your passport with you in case an inspector asks to see it, though they rarely do.

Hello,
you can also buy your ticket for regional trains on the Trenitalia website. If you have a smartphone or a tablet, you can show direclty from your device the pdf file that system sends at your email. When you buy the ticket online you have to select a specific train, and the ticket is valid for the selected train or for another train that leaves in the next 4 hours .No validation is required in this case, but you can't use the ticket in another day or after the 4 hours. The ticket is personal, the system requires the name and the ticket is valid only for that person.

If you buy a ticket at the ticket office (or machines), they ask you for the day, and the ticket is valid for a travel in the selected day. You have to validate the ticket before the travel ad it is valid in the next 4 hours after the validation. This type of ticket is not personal.

A ticket from Civitavecchia to Roma Termini (or any other station in Rome) for regional trains costs 5 euro and there are not advantages for early booking or special deals, the price for regional tickets does not depends on the day.

Although the fares on regional trains are, as noted above, very reasonable, why pay if you don't have to? :)

Do remember, though, that Inter City and above will require a reservation and/or supplement.

For Intercity trains fares are different. You can choose many options and deals (if available). Usually early booking allows you to find the cheapest fare, but the different fares have different rules for refund, change and access to a different train. For example, the cheapest fare "Super Econony" is not refundable, you can't change the ticket and the access to a different train is not permitted.

For Intercity train, the fare is global and includes the seat reservation.

Hi,

I have just travelled from Ashford Intl to Florence and used the railway to make some day trips out.

The ticket machines have an option to select your language and are easier to use than the one's we have here in the UK.

If booking in advance I use the great site loco2.com. No booking fees, easy to use and you can select to pay in GBP or EUR.

Have a good trip :D

...and that FIP coupons are not valid on the Fiumicino "Leonardo" airport express shuttle, so don't be tempted to have a quick return trip! OK for the slow trains on that route, and on the other suburban services.

I'd second using loco2.com, I booked tickets between Pisa and Milan with them last year and found their website much easier than Trenitalia. You get a booking reference by email which is all you need on the train.
