The only point I was able to extract was that the third off-peak Norwich service is likely to be an additional service to the current Ipswich stopper, not an extension of.

Does this suggest that direct services from Lowestoft (and Peterborough?) will be the stoppers will be the current stoppers south of Ipswich in the hours that they run?

4 Direct services from Lowestoft each weekday I believe, so it's likely they will attach to another bi-mode or two from Norwich on the way down.

Peterborough - Ipswich are being extended to Colchester and the Sudbury service is extended from Marks Tey to Colchester Town, those extensions are under wires.

I believe the direct services to Lowestoft are something else entirely as the only commitment made is 4tpd. It's entirely possible of course that it will simply be that four of the regular Ipswich diagrams are set to run to Lowestoft and be operated by a pair of Bimode units. I must admit, I forgot about these during our meeting. However, this is also straying into the realms of timetabling. Early on in the conversation it was insisted that one of the major points of discussion (right below the seating point) is that the timetable development process should be more open to rail user groups and the likes, to avoid any short-term disastrous situations that require amendment (an example was mentioned from the NX days where a stop removal caused Ingatestone to be dangerously overcrowded with schoolchildren). The timetable has of course not been written yet, so intricacies like how the different service patterns will interact may not receive a solid answer for quite a while yet.

I will have to do some thinking to work out whether running Lowestoft diagrams as irregular extensions of the current :02 Ipswich diagram works out in terms of timing. We can probably make some good educated guesses about this sort of stuff, though hopefully Class 755s (class # still TBC?) will get better journey times than the current 156s and 170s, certainly when under the wires.

Will the proposed level crossing closures mean any increase at all in speed limits in the areas affected? This could also shave a little off journey times. Some lines such as the Braintree and Sudbury branches are still limited to 50mph but not sure if this is due to the track or because of the number of use-worked crossings the trains need to pass.

Noting dramatic but even a 10mph increase could make a difference, although of course on these branches the trains can't go that fast because the stations are quite close together, unless some services skipped stations at times.

It's been a long time since I've been on the Braintree line but I remember the track being awful. The inter-station distances are quite small though, so I'm not sure there'd be much benefit.

Assuming (as with other bi-modes) that they can change on the move, it'll mean them running on electric into the cities- which means no diesels idling in the cities, and the units can use the main platforms at Stansted Airport. When the Norwich-Cambridge and Cambridge-Stansted services join that'll run all the way from Ely North to the Airport under wires. On the Cambridge and Peterborough to Ipswich services it'll mean they run from Haughley Junction into Ipswich on AC, and there's a daily extension from and to Harwich of the Cambridge service to connect to the ferry.
Plus the franchise commitment to run through services to London.

Thanks. My comments weren't intended as a criticism, I was just wondering what the plans were and how much running on electric they were actually going to do. I didn't realize they were going to run into Liverpool Street! What services will these be? Direct Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth?

Direct Lowestoft it seems.
Great Yarmouth is (was?) a summer extension of some Norwich fasts - although I'm sure we'll get some clarification on that.

As I understand it in the early/mid 00s Great Yarmouth (And Cromer too) had direct trains to London operated by class 170s however due to low patronage these were removed. This then left the two summer saturday diagrams which were operated by the full Class 90 + DVT set under wires to Norwich, and then dragged to Great Yarmouth. However this has now ceased so Great Yarmouth does not have any direct connections to London.

20.02 Sheringham to Liverpool St & 06.20 Liverpool St-Sheringham where 150/2s & never survived after the 170s where built. On a Saturdays it was late afternoon from Sheringham.

There are no plans to reintroduce any through Yarmouth trains as far as I am aware.

Summary of points discussed with Abellio 'Stakeholder Engagement Adviser' yesterday evening:

General

- What is the seat pitch and how will the seats compare to those on other contemporary stock like the Class 387, 700 etc?
>He did not have seat pitch figures available unfortunately, so these have been requested. The seats will not be the same as the controversial ones on the 387s and 700s, but beyond that I don't have much specific info.
There is currently a mockup of a Stadler unit already in existence at Norwich. An Aventra mockup is underway at Derby and will be ready within a couple of months. However, as these are full-size mockups they are not suitable to showcase in stations.
We laboured the point that the passengers should have a say on the seat design before units are arriving for test en masse and strongly suggested that an individual seat demo, as per Northern, is conducted at Liverpool Street. This has been passed on and highlighted in his notes (I observed him doing so) as the most important point regarding the new fleet.

- How will the power/USB sockets on the units be configured? (Not shown on the current renders) Particularly with regard to the '3 side' on the Aventra 3+2 seating since power sockets on such a system is unprecedented
>For this, he was specific regarding the Stadler IC units, Standard class gets a power socket & USB port for every pair of seats in Standard, a power socket & USB for every single seat in First class. I didn't establish if that also applies to the regional Bimodes.
Information regarding the power socket config for the Aventras wasn't available to hand, so I'm waiting to hear back about this.

- What is the capability of the PIS fitted to the new fleet, how does it compare to existing second generation displays (e.g. Class 700), and will the system fitted be the same for both types of unit?
>Generally speaking the system is to be considered similar to that of the Class 700, though he did allude to the possibility of extra (arguably less useful) info appearing on the intercity units. The system will use colour displays to show stopping patterns and loading indicators at the very least, though loading indicators are apparently on a 3-level scale not 4-level as per the Class 700.

Aventra

- How many 8-car off-peak services will be shortened to 5-car?
>All down to management once the fleet is introduced, so we won't know yet. I didn't receive a 'many / few / none' answer.

- Will the 10-car fixed formation units be restricted to peak time usage? If so, will this not create a maintenance discrepancy between units that cover fewer miles and don't work the late night services?
>Seemingly it looks like they might, but I am a little concerned about this, ending up after a few years with tatty 5-car units and still immaculate 10-car sets. Again though, this is more of an operational issue that could change dynamically once the fleets are introduced.

Flirt

- Where are the seating layouts for the Stadler units?
>These seemingly were omitted from the presentation, they are around and will be passed onto us in due course. No doubt they will be shared as soon as we see them.

- What is the unit length (per train and per vehicle) of the Stadler fleets?
>See above, info has been requested

Renatus

- What is happening, and have things reached a point where Eversholt are considering pulling the plug?
>Nothing heard at this stage but he does agree that the value of having extensively refurbished units potentially cover only a few weeks in service before withdrawal is minimal. I suspect we may only hear more of this further down the line.
It did not seem that we had the 'right man' for asking questions about Renatus, but nonetheless the question has been noted.

I had a few other questions but a lot of this revolved around timetabling, which will have a separate consultation period as the new timetable that considers this fleet will be written next year. We also raised the point that rail user groups should have more say regarding the timetable, which has also been noted.
The only point I was able to extract was that the third off-peak Norwich service is likely to be an additional service to the current Ipswich stopper, not an extension of.

Despite an interesting discussion, most of the important parts are at this point unanswered, though I understand one man isn't likely to know the detail for all these points. I'm hopeful that we'll see at the very least the seat pitch and the Stadler seat layouts before long. We'll keep a close eye on the development of a seat demo.

Thanks for sharing this and keeping the pressure on GA, lets hope that they take on board the suggestions, not least a Aventra/seating mock up.

I too have heard rumours that the Renatus programme is now so delayed that it's future is being re-considered.

Was that the one that had that altercation with a tractor?

Great I had wondered what was taking them so long. Did it get the refurbishment the other 170s are getting as well? Also, I assume this means the 68 hauled set is going once the Turbostar comes back into service...

It I would imagine will now take its turn in going through refurb just like the others. Was possibly coming back as a 2-car & renumbered 274 but obviously sorted what was major damage especially to the side of the centre car where it came into contact with the trailer. Yes, 68s should go back. What a frightening insurance bill this is going to add up to.

Does that make all DMU's available again?

Are both short sets actually used most days?

So 170204 is back home at Crown Point and it must be said Brodies have done a very good job. The only thing obviously out of place is that one cab (the one that was smashed) is in much better condition than the other one now!

342/343 in service today. As would have been 339/348 but they jacked at Liverpool Street having arrived ECS from Ilford.
Obviously decided that as they are purple they can cope without renumbering these!
The Stansted 317 diagram is two manky /5s, bet thats gone down well...

The 317/5's are not manky they've just been refreshed you should see the condition of the Gatwick Express 387's and Southern 377's:-x

I had a ride on 317343 this evening between Cambridge & Liverpool St. A few confused passengers were not sure if it was a Kings Cross service due to the GN livery. Seemed a nice enough train, not as recently refreshed as the regular 317/5 and 317/6s.

How come Greater Anglia have taken these units on, is it to do with the timetable changes for Cambridge North? How many have Greater Anglia taken on lease?

All twelve Great Northern units are being transferred, to bolster the West Anglia fleet until the Class 720s come in.

Mainly it's to lengthen services and provide some slack- due to the delivery timescales they need to (as detailed in the franchise agreement) modify a number for post 2020 disability access requirements, including 26 that will be fitted for Selective Door Opening (which almost certainly means 12 car services at 8 car stations)
