Wow. French debating is so much better than the British system.

The two candidates sit down and have a face-to-face debate with each other for two hours. Hardly any questions are asked.

Our two leading candidates won't even enter a debate.

French debating could be so much better. Le Pen quite frankly was a disgrace last night, her main tactic to be to belittle Macron and launch personal attacks. I presume it's because she knows that her own manifesto doesn't hold water so better to attack the opposition.

Macron is sometimes accused of being arrogance and in my view a bit of that came out last night - but when you're up against the way that Le Pen was behaving I think anybody with half an inkling of a manifesto could happily appear as arrogant.

I do like the polite way that he referes to her as Madame Le Pen, which grates with the poor champion of the people 'Marine'. :)

Corbyn, as leader of the opposition who didn't like PMQs being a load of yelling at one another, should be suggesting something like that. After all it was Cameron who got us the leader debates when he was leader of the opposition.

Yes, 65% for Macron, 34% for Le Pen. It's only the English speaking western world that's losing it's mind and is upside down and on fire.

Although, France will likely end up with someone from a very small party being president which may make implementing his ideas a bit difficult.

35% of people voting for what appears to me to be a slightly disguised fascist is concerning. However the French have a much narrower centre ground than we do I guess.

This all depends on the turnout of course. Looking at wikipedia, it seems that Le Pen went from 7,678,491 in the first round to 9,001,650 in the second (projected). Macron went from 8,656,346 to 15,310,413, with the turnout dropping by about 9.5 million to 75.7% from 77.8%

I'm sure the working class of France will be well impressed with Macron in charge, he'll have so much in common with them

I feel a lot of the issues come from the peculiar French voting system. A reasonable attempt at trying to create a more representative and less bipartisan system, however it could probably do with updating towards a STV runoff system

Macron wins.
No Frexit.
So much for the 'doomed' EU.

I'd have thought that the French were second only to us in their euroscepticism (I understand that it was still not uncommon to have prices displayed in French Francs many years after they joined the €urozone). I suspect that the vote for Le Pen was boosted by hopes of leaving the EU. So I'd suggest that this result is a vote of confidence for the remainder of the EU - at least for now.

Because Marine Le Pen , a former lawyer , who grew up in a mansion and has a net worth of over 250 Million USD , is really in touch with the working class

Reminds me of a slightly poorer version of the US election, neither candidate in touch with reality, although I would imagine Le Pen does mix with the lower classes slightly more often

I don't know the precise figures, but I can't imagine that the population of France is anything like big enough for a 2.1% drop in turnout to represent 9.5 million people! :)

Very pleased with the result though.

It did seem a bit odd as I was typing it. Checking again this morning, it seems that it dropped 1.5 million and 3%, which seems more consistent with the number of registered voters (47.4 million)

I see, a Woman with a Jewish partner is a fascist?

As opposed to the candidate that wants unelected EU autocrats to continue to run his Country.

I didn't realise that being Jewish or a woman precluded you from being a fascist.

As for your assertion that the EU is fascist: bonkers. The EU is deeply flawed but it isn't fascist (in fact it's quite the opposite!).

Apologies if I've misunderstood but I think he was saying Macron is the fascist, not the EU?

Congratulations to Monsieur Macron, the youngest president since Boney apparently.

He's been described as an economically liberal centrist in the media. One of the most impressive things about France has been its refusal to rush headlong into a laissez-faire economic model. I just hope that France isn't forced into a wave of privatisations and sell offs.

How can one be a fascist if (by the poster's assertion) you cede the running of your country to another entity? That's exactly what fascism *isn't*!

Some of my faith in humanity has been restored, I'm sure old Mrs May is gutted he got in as he is a true centrist and loyal to the EU unlike her. Should put the momentum of the Brexit negotiations back with the EU.

Apparently Macron's wife is 24 years older than him and his former teacher. I imagine if the relationship was the other way around (the man being the teacher 24 years older) the media would have made a huge fuss about it.

Thanks for the morning chuckle, considering everyone and their dog have been telling us that Le Pen had no chance of election I would imagine that Mrs May didn't exactly need to be revived after the results came in from Paris

I think she'd have had more of a headache if Le Pen had won, as that'd have caused some more pressing matters to be dealt with for the EU than Brexit.
