Notable towns without Stagecoach local buses

Goole used to have the 357 service from Scunthorpe on Saturdays only and was run by Stagecoach.

When the Stagecoach east Scotland 40 group finishes, South Queensferry will still be served by the X51, which also serves South Queensferry, when running between Dunfermline and Livingston, another town with a Stagecoach service. Move forward a few miles to Bathgate, no Stagecoach services.

Stagecoach also ran the 620 in the past (c.2001) before it passed to Cotswold Green.

Stagecoach also used to operate Sunday journeys in the mid 1990s on the X54 that ran as a combination of the X55 (Swindon to Chippenham) and 231 (Chippenham to Bath) jointly with Badgerline.

Thank you all for your feedback. I realise from your posts that another town potentially without any Stagecoach buses is Weston-Super-Mare. I think Bridlington & Scarborough is another such area.

Burnley and Blackburn were a Stagecoach stronghold until 2001, when East Lancs operations were divested to form Lancashire United/Burnley & Pendle (now parts of Transdev)

Stagecoach retained a presence in both by way of the X63 route from Preston for a few years, later cut back to Blackburn only as the X59 (later X2 - possibly now also withdrawn entirely east of Preston)

Bolton garage was also sold off to LU in 2001 (later sold to Blue Bus in 2002, then Arriva in 2005). However, Stagecoach retained a Bolton presence through the 125/126/127 from Chorley/Preston, plus their three running boards on the 22 from Stockport. Now routes from their Wigan operation such as the 540 (bought out from First a few years back) also reach Bolton.

North Shields, and Whitley Bay, see Go north east and Arriva, but no Stagecoach services. But, in North shields, you're only a 7 minute ferry crossing from Stagecoach territory.

X48 is a once a day trip from Coventry to Nuneaton only. 48 runs all week to Leicester every 30 minutes.
X7 also runs to Leicester, from Milton Keynes via Northampton. Monday to Saturday only.

Some corrections.

Route 48 is Leicester - Nuneaton - Coventry, runs every 20 mins
Route X7 is Leicester - Northampton - Milton Keynes, every 30 mins to Northampton, hourly to MK.
Both run 7 days a week.

The X90 ran from Newcastle via MetroCentre, a loop around Chester le Street, then off at Bowburn to run via Metal Bridge, Ferryhill and then Newton Aycliffe and into Darlington. At least once, they extended it via Northallerton and Thirsk to York.

There was a Stagecoach 32/32A service that ran from Ferryhill to Catterick via Darlington. The route was actually a copy of Darlington Transport's 22 that was designed to compete with United 722/3 and 27/28 when the bus war was at its height. When Stagecoach set up in Darlington, they simply registered everything that DTC operated.

Since historic services and Stagecoach Express services have been mentioned in a few other examples, I'll throw in the short lived extension of the (Dundee - Edinburgh) X54 through to Newcastle and North Shields for the ferry.

IIRC it also served Berwick on Tweed (another town mentioned on the thread) or at least Haggerston Castle, but can't be certain of stops between Edinburgh and Newcastle.

For the first few days of Stagecoach Darlington, the theoretical service pattern was

• United 27/28 Darlington to Catterick - every 30 mins (the traditional headway)
• DTC 22/22A Ferryhill to Catterick via Darlington - every 30 mins (DTC's response to United competition in Darlington)
• United 12/12A Darlington to Catterick - every 30 mins (United's response to DTC's incursion)
• Stagecoach Darlington 32/32A - Ferryhill to Catterick via Darlington - every 30 mins operated free to avoid the need to wait 6 weeks and force DTC off the road

Cue the sight of a VR following a Leopard following an LH into Richmond!! In reality, once Stagecoach appeared, the DTC competition disappeared as they had no drivers and collapsed by the Thursday.

There was actually a Sunday Only Huddersfield to Buxton via Holmfirth service operated by Stagecoach East Midlands prior to Stagecoach acquiring Yorkshire Traction. I think the service transferred to Stagecoach Yorkshire after they acquired Yorkshire Traction but wasn't retained.

That's correct, as the last day of the 61A was the 16th March '08. It was an integrated service with the 473 which ran to Chatsworth via Snake Pass which was operated by Stagecoach EM, Yorkshire had the 61A. In '05 TM Travel took over the 473 but Stagecaoch retained the 61A.

It was later replced with the tendered 951 which was operated by Centrebus from the former Stagecoach depot at Waterloo before Tates took it over in 2014 and in 2016 LOT. Come 2017 and even the replacement has banished into history.

A couple of places in Scotland for you. Clydebank, Greenock, and Galashiels.

Clydebank actually had local Stagecoach services for a brief time in the 1990s, as per these images. Not sure how long they lasted, but they had certainly pulled out of the town entirely by the turn of the century.

Anyways, to further add to the Scottish list: Milngavie, Paisley, Dumbarton, Helensburgh, Balloch, Motherwell & Coatbridge all have no Stagecoach services.

For those wondering about Greenock & Hamilton, the 585 (to/from Ayr), the X16/X17 (also to/from Ayr, the latter on weekends only) & the X74 (to/from Dumfries) serve them and their respective bus stations.

They only operate in East and South London , and they have zero presence in West , South and North London

True but they do feel rather concentrated in one area of London,which is the point I was making. Metroline for example are hugely dominant in NW London, but they are pretty big in central and south West London, and North London too

EDIT - Stagecoach took over the 25 but replaced it with an extension to the X43 in 1997 before becoming the 25 again in 2000.

Washington, in Tyne and Wear, has no Stagecoach services.
