What is your Favorite line.

I like the railway linking Peterborough and Ely, that is generally run by a turbostar (GA and XC)(Greater Anglia and Crosscountry) along with Express Sprinters 158s. The trains are "new" (When in fact they don't).
The main point is, I love the big lake after the green bridge, you can see birds and seagulls there. It is beautiful. I also like the half closed railway station of March, I would like to have a visit to the historic Railway Junction. Also this line is full of signal boxes which is still in use and the historic Semaphore signal, which also is my favorites too.

My favourite railway line has to be the Welsh Marches line, with others being the former CLC Liverpool to Manchester line, West Highland line, Cumbrian Coast line and the Calder Valley line.

The Kirklees Light Railway is very good which was once a main branch line connecting the Penistone one and in 1991 they made it into a mini railway from Clayton West to Shelley.

WCML - For the fact that it's the closest to me , frequent services , and you have a huge variety of trains , from clapped out 1972 stock , 378s , 377s , 350s , 319s , Pendolinos , Voyagers and lots of freight

Also a fan of the Chiltern Line , as I lived near there a few years ago , and liked Chiltern as an operator

If tube lines count , then Vic and Jubilee . The trains are fast af on the Vic , and the Jubilee sets just sound cool , and the JLE stations are cavernous

Quite like the North Wales Coast line between Chester and Holyhead. Nice scenery

For me it's Victoria to East Croydon. Mostly for nostalgia to be honest. I'm no rose tinted spectacles wearer, but i would love one more run on a Connex liveried slammer over that route. I like urban scenery. You get Selhurst depot, Windmill Junction, Clapham, Selhurst Park, you overtake the stoppers, the occasional glances of London Skyline. I like it. I'm also usually with or going to see mates so usually in a good mood too.

Barking to Gospel Oak...Used to be Barking to Kentish Town...I've lived near to this line since the early seventies and it passes two schools I went to.Don't think I will ever forget the Stratford silver roofed Class 47's that used to pass during a school day on a freight.Happy days.I still pass the line on every workday commute and see the odd 170.Haven't seen a freight recently but there are tell tale signs of electrification.

Also the Wirksworth branch (which I discovered in the 70's) a place where I could see my favourite Class 20 locos although i haven't been up there for twenty years now.

Highland Main Line for me, just ahead of the West Highland and Kyle lines.

HML just gets the nod for me because of the excitement of travelling through the scenery at main line speeds rather than trundling along the other 2 routes, plus the sense of achievement reaching the highest point on the rail network.

Feels like a major achievement on a 170

WCML is my favourite, in particular, the section south of Rugby.

It's not like me to be one of the nostalgic types on here, but as a kid on the Caledonian Sleeper (still run by Nat Ex Scotrail) I'd always glare out the window as we sped through in the opposite direction to the one in which we departed in the night before, where I'd always be waiting for the usual stations which told me that we were close to London. From memory, the stations I looked out for most were:

Leighton Buzzard (the very first station I ever remember passing)
Tring (Noticed this station as I got older as there'd always be announcements of these services at Euston)
Hemel Hempstead
Watford Junction (A personal landmark which told me I was really close to London)
Wembley Central
Harrow and Wealdstone
Queens Park
Kensal Green

Overall, it was the hustle and bustle of the morning rush hour that won me over, something I had never seen in comparison at home in Scotland. Having been born and raised up here, I tend to take great scenery for granted but if I'm being completely honest, it was nice (on the WCML) to be able to pass various canals without seeing plastic bags and Irn Bru cans floating down them.

Weird these may be, but hey...it isn't my favourite line for nothing

A close call between the Chiba suspended monorail in Japan, Petit train d'Artouste in the French Pyrenees (amazing views and you get marmots coming up to the train to be fed) & The Cumbres & Toltec.

In this country it would probably be:

Exeter to Penzance.
Fort William to Mallaig.
As others have said, the West Coast Mainline (variety and scenery too).
Anywhere around a big city where there's lots of lines everywhere.

The Torbay and Dartmouth.
The Ffestiniog.

Abroad:

Various railways in Sri Lanka including the route down the coast from Colombo and also the one from Kandy into the mountains.
The train along the length of Lake Como in Italy.
Tren de Soller in Majorca.
The railways and trams around Lisbon in Portugal.

I pretty much enjoy any rail trip to anywhere though really. There's always something to see (unless it's dark).

The Cambrian line, especially the coast portion for me.

I really like the variety of the Looe Valley line too. I also really enjoyed the West Highland line to Mallaig and the Cumbrian Coast line. I've not yet been on the Settle to Carlisle, Kyle of Lochalsh or Far North lines yet, but plan to hopefully this year.

Other enjoyable ones are The Conwy Valley, The Heart Of Wessex and The Heart Of Wales lines. Oh, and the St Ives Branch when the sun's out!

Todmorden to Burnley. What is now known as the Copy Pit line (although I doubt anyone younger than 50 will remember Copy Pit, or even know where, or what it was). In early childhood (that's before 1947) we lived in Tod just 250m away from the line, and I can hear now the sound of the engines whistling to each other as the banker came up onto the waiting coal train down at Stansfield Hall, and then the slowly accelerating intermeshing double beat of the engines as they came up the bank to Kitson Wood tunnel (we called it Harley Wood tunnel). The line fell almost into disuse for a time, but is busy again as a trans-Pennine route. It isn't just the scenery either - the line has some majestic engineering works and it's well worth a trip. - AND you can do Manchester Vic. to Burnley now that they've put Tod. west curve back.

The Cumbria Coast/Furness Line will always make me smile as it was my way 'home' to see family and friends for many years and when the weather is right it has some of the most stunning views of coast and fell from a rail line in the country.
