Trains are at a stand and have been for some time due to Signalling/TCF problem in the Challow area which is expected to last for the remainder of the day. The obvious diversionary route, Berks and Hants, is closed for Engineering work and passengers advised not to travel due also, to difficulty in sourcing busses. Trains which have already started out are turning back even as far back as Newport. There is the usual ticket acceptance arranged with other TOCs.

Absolutely pathetic. Stuck on one just before Swindon southbound. This was known about so why set trains on past Kemble?

Signalling issues are between Swindon and Didcot, Kemble line should be unaffected, unless it's a case of not being able to put incoming trains anywhere due to them stacking up in Swindon.

Is there not a possibility of diverting Welsh trains via Oxford etc as they have done before during engineering or isn't there capacity, or simply not worth the effort?

Not with a full Chiltern service running no.

I don't think Chiltern is relevant here. The issue is at Challow which is between Didcot and Swindon, according to NRES. Diversionary routes would be Oxford and Worcester reverse to Bristol or via Hereford.

Or maybe via Basingstoke, Salisbury and Westbury assuming its all Short Swing Link Bogies in the HSTs and route knowledge.

The line between Didcot and Swindon has no junctions west of Foxhall and no stations. It will be interesting to discover why a 'signal failure' could stop the job. Anyone have knowledgeable comments please?

Complete failure of the signalling system - A "red-out" in railway parlance - nothing can move until points etc can be secured on the ground. Trying to coordinate that over a 20+ mile stretch of railway is no mean feat.

There haven't been any track circuits between Didcot and Swindon for a while now...

Except for the handful there are

But axle counters, track circuits, same difference in practical train running terms.

Would all the signalling equipment for the affected stretch run off a single power supply?

NRE Service Disruptions says all lines now re-opened. Obviously disruption will continue as trains and crews displaced.

Looks like I made the correct decision to come back from London on the 12.00 Bristol service today! A close shave indeed!

Should have gone to Specsavers, thought it was Cholsey.
