Hello,

Can I ask what you think about this.

Me (age 16) and my four friends (all age 15) are planning on making a journey on advance fares, using a family railcard (not bought yet, but I will be a named cardholder). Do T&Cs allow this?

Short answer "Yes" and as quoted from the FRPP (Fares Manual)

Customer eligibility
Any adult aged 16 and over. One or two named card holders. Must have at least one child accompanying at all times.

Size of group

The minimum 'Family & Friends' group consists of one adult named on the Railcard and one child. Adults cannot travel alone on discount price tickets purchased with this Railcard.

The maximum group size is four adults (including named cardholder/s) and four children.

A child is anyone aged between 5 and 15 years when the Railcard is issued. They travel at the child’s discounted fare throughout the duration of the Railcard’s validity even if they become 16 during that time.

You would be the minimum one adult and your four friends would reach the maximum number of children so you are perfectly within the T&Cs to do what you plan.

Yep! I know some people who do just that. The only problem can be sometimes you get people on child tickets who look older than people on adult tickets, and some guards may query it. Expect to be asked "Who is the adult?" a lot. But it's valid and that's what counts!

Oh, and they still qualify for the discount even when they turn 16, providing they were Under 16 when the railcard was purchased!

My son of 14yrs old is 6ft 4 and sometimes I get queried as to his age as he's 2 inchs taller than me. my advice always have some laughable quip to bounce of them. i usually just tell him "O i put cow muck in his shoes when he was 2 and look what happened!!" They usually just grin and walk away.
