I've seen a render of the TPE 68s in the rumoured new livery minus yellow ends and I have to say, in my opinion, the 68s really lose impact without the yellow nose.

Isn't GBRF already doing it? They have orange fronts!

They still have the required yellow warning panels...

Transpennine Express. Pretty much a foregone conclusion that they'll be the first ones without yellow front ends on a locomotive when they run 68s with Mk5s soon.

The RAF paint their training aircraft high visibility black, it stands out better at a distance. So why not train end?

I still maintain that from ground level, headlight or no, the yellow end of the train is the first thing you pick up. I worry about picking up the headlight in bright sunlight.

Black works for the RAF against a predominantly white/grey cloud base but yellow works really well at ground level among all the clutter.

I agree, especially for those that work or walk about yards and sidings where the trains main headlights will not be in use.

I see no benefit in the removal of yellow fronts other than possibly aesthetics, and that should not come before safety of those on the ground.

Where yellow ends are already required on existing stock, even with traction that complies with the requirements, it costs time and money to gain the relevent certification. If its cheaper to retain the existing yellow ends then they will be retained.

Its not uncommon for me to see the headlights of a 66 or a 220 several miles behind me on the ECML but the likes of a 225 are very difficult to see, even with yellow ends which is what I often see first, so some traction definately needs them.

Unfortunately, for now, we're unable lawfully to improve upon the imposed EU standard, even though we're an island and there is no practical chance of any international service on most lines.

Do class 374 meet the regs for lighting that could enable them to have blue where the yellow is?

UIC standards are not EU standards; UIC long predates the EU and has membership beyond the EU

the GBRf livery is a particularly daft situation- there's surely no way that would be measurably less visible if the whole cab end was in the "corporate" yellow-orange

Network Rail's is possibly even sillier with the warning panel being a very slightly different shade of yellow to the rest of the loco.

That's because the yellow end regulations specify the exact shade of yellow. Even a better shade would not be allowed.

EU law limits the extent to which we can deviate from international standards and RSSB considered that it was no longer within its discretion to insist upon the yellow front panels.

^What!!?? Would they next insist that we increase all clearances, regardless of cost or even possibility, and lower all our platforms!? Bring on Brexit!

You seem to be unaware of the proposed provisions of the Great Repeal Bill, where all existing EU legislation that affects the UK will be brought into domestic UK law. The UK Parliament can then "amend, repeal and improve" the laws as necessary.
