I wonder whether the Sidings Hotel got any extra business as a result of this event?

they were open early for brekkies, and going on the very large number of vehicles parked nearby - they must have !! convenient that the 4 trains stopped just at the hotel

I didn't go in the end as it would have been too much of an early start.

It's certainly done its intended job though and really seems to have captured the imagination of the general public - which was, of course, the whole point of the exercise.

It's also telling that #Fourtrains has been trending on Twitter all day. It's given exposure of the Azuma, VTEC, The Flying Scotsman (and by association, the NRM) the ECML and rail travel in general to a wordwide audience. Job well done, I'd say!

Is the sidings still going for rail fans?

Not like it used to be - still some memorabilia but not the collection of models that used to be there.

Still pleasant surroundings with a railway feel though

Has it been commented that the azuma was on diesel power. Not approved for electric yet perhaps?
K

I bet it's on diesel. Like why would they have it on electric if it has only ran on 25kv a few times.

Or is it on electricity?

Looking at this screenshot there appears to be an exhaust heat haze above the azumas first coach. however, the position of the deltic in the convoy relative to the photographers position could explain this.

That said I cannot see a pantograph along the azumas roof raised....

The OHL equipment is optimised for the "right" direction. As the Azuma was going the "wrong" way the pantograph could catch and bring the wires down.

I find that hard to believe. What about if single line working. Is in operation. Some parts of the ecml are fully directional. Not sure about tollerton.

Would they have needed special dispensation from NR to have them all going in the same direction when two of the tracks would normally be for going the other way?

Yes. There was a complete block on the line anyway at Thirsk so there wad no traffic. Signallers would have set the route and authorised the movement which would have been pre planned.

Personally as VTEC are billing this as a celebration of the ECML I think the other TOCs should have had a presence too. A following cavalcade involving TPE (185), XC (220), GC, HT (180 in multiple) GTR(N) (365) as they operate significant stretches of the ECML too (arguably EMT and Northern serve too small a bit) but then again the danger of making the event too big and with earlier wibble involving the traction choices i guess a line had to be drawn somewhere. It is Virgin showboating the Azuma after all...

Im suprised they didnt use the NRM 40 power car tho...

did they not use that one?

From the videos I've seen on youtube the leading power car appeared to be in the NRM40 livery.

Despite much access to youtube etc, I have yet to see a decent video of all four trains, at speed, whizzing along the ECML, which is what I thought the intention was -in short, a spectacle.

They are all snail speed, or with the 800 in front, for some reason.

Does any kind person have a link to such a video, preferably lineside, but overhead would also be good, please?

it was a movement in a possession therefore 25 mph max - no whizzing ;)

They did??? Think I should have gone to specsavers then!

Didnt spot it but then again all the pix/vids I have seen so far have been distance or front end shots!

Plenty of coverage on BBC Look North Yorkshire that day, so it might be worth looking on their Facebook page or iPlayer.

In particular the news segments during BBC Breakfast had good shots of the Deltic sitting alongside the Flying Scotsman at York Station, rather than being ignored behind the clouds of steam and smoke at the back.

Won't Virgin have recorded its own footage, presumably to feature in an upcoming advert?

Looking at a few of the photos online, the Azuma indeed looks to not have any pantographs raised

What would be different about the OHLE where the line is unidirectional being run wrong direction?
