Just saw on Granada Reports the Conservative Metro Mayor candidate for the Liverpool City region say if he's elected each borough would get a new train line! The presenter told him that would cost a fortune, which he disputed.

I think he just made it up on the spot to make himself look better than the Lib Dem candidate who said more needs to be done to improve services in areas which don't get the benefit of Merseyrail.

I'd be amazed if anyone other than Labour won it and they will probably do so in the first round.

Second will probably be between the Lib Dems and the kippers. The Tories could well finish fourth and even then only if the suburban vote turns out well enough to put them ahead of the greens.

No doubt forum members with a better knowledge of Liverpool local government can explain.
Liverpool City Region is commonly described in terms of having five 'districts'. Transport strategies are often written with (say) 30-year horizons.
I am sure that people on the forum could come up with (literally) a 'handful' of rail schemes that might be beneficial to Liverpool over this timescale.
I am almost surprised that every candidate isn't proposing something similar or even more ambitious.

UKIP are totally irrelevant in Liverpool (as indeed everywhere else, but they will stand less of a chance here.)
To keep to transport matters, Steve Rotheram (Labour) has promised to re-regulate bus services which is something we desperately need. Anyone who does something to bring the Northern network up to the standards of Merseyrail will get my vote.

The equivalent Manchester deal was done with a Labour leader (Richard Leese).
And Merseyside has plenty of non-Labour voters outside the core city.

The clip I saw from the Tory candidate Tony Caldeira just mentioned "improved transport links", which is difficult to argue with.

I was so taken aback, as I almost read the word that I queried as "Layabout"...

He seems to be running on a "not Liverpool" ticket, being based in Knowsley and St Helens, and with Wirral interests.

Knowsley is only separated from Liverpool by a line on the map and contains many of it's overspill estates. It also has no tory councillors and even less tory voters than Liverpool.
St.Helens has no tory councillors and has some of the safest labour seats in the country.
The more affluent West Wirral may provide some votes but would be counter balanced by the poorer East Wirral.

It's not going to happen, it'll be between Labour and the Lib Dems. There are Conservative voters on Merseyside of course, but nowhere near enough for the suggestions of new lines for each district to be more than just an idea.

In his (don't know the candidate's name) defence though, there's every chance 'new' could have been taken a bit more literally than it was intended. I can't see many, if any, new lines in the Liverpool City Region any time soon, but I think there will be some large investment in rail infrastructure over the next five or ten years. I do hope some funding is diverted towards a larger Merseyrail fleet though, that is going to be key if any new lines are going to be realised.

For the record, I am a floating voter and haven't decided who to vote for yet.

Actually slugs have millions of teeth... It's true, Look up Radula on Wikipedia! It has even got a photo to prove it.
I would have agreed probably not many tories in Liverpool though, but I just looked it up; in 2011 they got a few more votes than the Greens but didn't get a seat - unlike the Greens who got 1!

Personally I know nothing about Liverpool politics and nor have I ever even set foot in the place, is it possible though that he might actually be doing the people of Liverpool a favour by this pronouncement? maybe the likely winners might feel that they have to up their plans for public transport in the city?
