Naming ideas for ScotRail HSTs

As someone else said, should definetly name the Power cars with appropriate names, would be a nice touch. Scotrail in 'First' days were a bit faceless and 'corporate' with things like that - there was a 170 named 'First transforming travel' if I remember correctly! Could even do a public vote for some of them (pretty sure this happened with some of the 47/7 locos, on the E & G push pulls back in BR days) - Any suggestions?

Well, the original names could well make a comeback! Here's all the "Scottish" names carried by the 47/7s (the push-pull lot, not the RES lot):

1. 701: "Waverley"
2. 701: "Saint Andrew"
3. 702: "Saint Cuthbert"

5. 704: "Dunedin"

"Greig Laidlaw"
and, like them or not,
"Alex Salmond" and
"Nicola Sturgeon".

And Geography has to also be taken into account:

"City of Glasgow"
"City of Aberdeen"
"City of Inverness"
"City of Dundee"
"City of Stirling"
"City of Perth".

I think the "City of..." names are a good start. There are a few names from the original 47/7 list that are no longer relevant, ie the ones related to the former administrative regions. I'm sure we could come up with a list of 54 names quite easily.

It would probably be quite good PR for Scotrail to open it up to the public with prizes for the best suggestions, but I fear we'll end up with stupid things like "Trainy McTrainface"!

You should actually have to accomplish something be considered for name use. Those individuals have accomplished zero!

Concur. I say this as an SNP supporter and a fan of both politicians (direct hate mail to my PM box please ) - is there really any need to commemorate living people on trains? Plenty of dead people worthy of memorial, and for those who aren't dead their opportunity will come around in due course I expect.

Wouldn't be opposed to a public poll of famous deceased Scots to adorn the trains. Provided the public got a short list to select from - we need to learn the lessons of Boaty.

To be frank, the politician idea was merely to test the water, everyone reviled at the idea as I had expected it to do so! Also concur re the public poll, just hope that the public's learned the lesson of Boaty; seems unlikely in that regard though!

In a somewhat similar vein, Strathclyder, as formerly carried by EMU 318266. While I'm fully aware that the unit that originally carried the name was not at all associated with the routes the HSTs will traverse, it'd be nice to see the name return to Scottish metals in some form or another. I'll coincide that it's blue-sky thinking at best, but I can dream...

Do the Scots suffer from some sort of inherent claustrophobia then?!

Not particularly, but we have stunning views out the windows on most of our routes. Even just going North out of Queen Street gets you a reasonably nice vista over the Campsies. And that's before you get to the stunning Bealach Druim Uachdair and Mòinteach Raineach to name but two noteworthy locations. Many of our tourists come specifically to enjoy the scenery, which is why Scotrail and the SG are putting emphasis on being able to actually see them from the train windows. Seats like this would be a real disappointment to tourists.

Only problem with reusing 47/7 names is that they are mostly 'Central Scotland' names - being a Highlander, I'd like to see some northern names (would draw the line at a power car called 'Titch Mcooey' however, hehe - ask an Invernesian if you're thinking 'Who'?!!). Maybe a 'V & A' named power car when it opens as well?

Sure we will see some modern ones (wouldn't be surprised to see a 'UHI' based name, for the new University of the Highlands and Islands, the main campus is right by the HML after all..). Think some of the VTEC power cars have at least a few of the 'City of..' names - not sure if they will carry over to the 'Azumas' when they arrive.

At least there's no suggestion of 'Kezia Dugdale', 'Ruth Davidson' and 'Willie Rennie' (or 'Patrick Harvie', even) as names, in the interests of political equality!

Good grief, I'd forgotten about him! My days of listening to MFR have long passed (I detest radio ads) - is he still on the go?

I would add the Spey to the list of rivers as it's crossed by the HML and the A2I lines. There's also the Nairn, the Findhorn and the Deveron too - is the Lossie too minor to get a mention?

We could have castles too - quite apt for ex-GWR stock!

Good suggestions, here's a few more:

"Loch Ness" (probably end up being "Nessie" with a cartoon monster vinyl wrap on the power car...) or "River Ness",
"V & A Museum" (when it opens),
"Iain Banks" (brilliant and much missed author, appropriate as the trains will be frequently heading over the Forth Bridge),
"University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI)" - bit boring, I know, but it is a significant thing for the Highlands,
"Joseph Mitchell" - Chief engineer during construction of the HML,
"Murdoch Patterson" - Chief engineer of the Highland Railway when the 'Direct' route north from Aviemore was constructed.
"David Jones" Highland Railway Locomotive Superintendent.

I'll try and think of a few more...!

Not to go over the top, but I think the name plates should correspond to the landmark silhouettes on the power cars where applicable.

Would love to see Robbie Burns' silhouette on a power car - although I couldn't imagine what this forum would be like if the engine on said power car flamed out climbing up Slochd Summit
