I wonder if somebody could educate me a bit here.

On platform 4 at Alexandra Palace, which is for stations on the Hertford Loop, there are 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 car stopping markers.

I understand the necessity of 3 and 6, for the class 313s and eventually 717s.

What else has used these platforms/what did they have in mind when these stopping markers were placed?

There are a couple of workings in the early morning/late evening which run round the Hertford Loop, formed formerly of 317/321, now of 365/387.

Similarly, when there are engineering diversions.

4- and 5-car markers could be useful if an Overground train heading for Crystal Palace makes a mistake and gets lost. ;)

Or a 10&12-car marker at Gillingham (Dorset) in case a 375/376/46x gets extremely lost and dragged

4-car 317s and 365s can and do work Hertford line services from time to time, as well as being able to stop in emergency.

8-car trains can also stop at Alexandra Palace. There used to be a booked early-morning such train. They can also stop in emergency, a good example being if a train is revised to start direct from Hornsey Depot going north during disruption, where the train may be instructed to run direct to Alexandra Palace ex Hornsey Depot via the flyover, stop there then run as booked.

the 5-car markers are a mystery- can't think of any 5-car or 2+3 car units that have ever worked the line. Didn't it basically go straight from loco hauled to 313s (with occasional other 4-car EMUs)?

Indeed a mystery! Before 313s it was mix of 3 types - class 31 + 6 mk1 suburbans, cravens class 105 DMU (2 car sets up to max 6 cars), class 125 DMU (3 car sets up to max 6 cars). The class 125 hydraulic DMUs had reliability issues and not unknown for 2 sets joined where one was missing a power car, there is a pic of such a formation on flickr. Thats the only 5 car I can think of! Then trains went to Broad Street (both DMU types), Moorgate via Farringdon (the loco sets and cravens only) as well as Kings X. By the time the 313s arrived all the stock used was pretty run down!

Could be for hull trains, wasn't there an engineering block a few years back. Where they started and terminated there. Also when they were diverted to st Pancras didn't they also call there for a crew change.

Maybe I've been misled by a sign with a '5' on it in between the 4- and 6- car stops that actually means something entirely different! :p Alternative explanations welcomed. It looks pretty old compared to the others.

Is it '5' or 'S' ? if the latter it means everything to stop at that point?

8 coach trains sometimes do stop at Alexandra Palace - The Cambridge stoppers used to call there off-peak in WAGN days.
I think a couple of the morning Welwyn-Kings cross stoppers are formed of 2x365s ?

We're talking about platform 4 here, the Down Hertford platform. Only trains on the Down Hertford Loop can use 4.

You could still get 2x317 or 2x365 stopping there, for example on a diverted outer-suburban service. Could also potentially get a defective train terminate there, tip out, and then run to Hornsey via Bowes Park.

As I said earlier.
