Cheshire Day Ranger. Monday 20th March 2017.
It was the first day of spring and the day started off very wet, but brightened up towards the afternoon, so not a bad day overall. My idea was to go hunting the new acquisitions from the south, the class 319`s, we get everyones cast offs in Manchester, but I do quite like the 319`s from their introduction for the then Bedpan lines, (Bedford to St Pancras). I knew at least one set had been delivered in Thameslink livery, so wanted to track it down, and the best way to do this was on a Cheshire Ranger.
Arriving into Manchester Victoria station by tram, I took a Northern Electric 319 towards Liverpool, I was however passed by 319 362 in Thameslink livery just before Newton Le Willows, it was on a Manchester Victoria service of all places. I alighted at Earlestown and took breakfast in the town while I waited for its return, and as luck has it, managed to snap the Arrival Wales behind class 67014. The Thameslink arrived just after 10.30 and I boarded it to Liverpool Lime Street.
I was surprised by the change at Lime Street, the 319`s now operate services to Preston, Warrington, Manchester Airport, Manchester Victoria and Liverpool South Parkway, an amazing transformation since my last visit. After spending some time at Lime Street, I caught a Virgin Pendolino to Crewe and later returned to Runcorn on another Virgin Pendolino changing for a London Midland 350 to take me to Liverpool South Parkway as I`d seen another Thameslink 319 on Allerton depot while passing, very difficult to obtain any decent photographs though, the one on the depot was 319 448, apparently there are four in the Northwest in Thameslink livery at the moment, but I didnt see the other two. As I was boarding the train from Runcorn a Freightliner class 66 had just climbed from the docks and was passing the station on the avoiding line.
Returning to Liverpool Lime Street on an East Midlands 158, two GBRf class 66`s and an EWS 66 were on Edge Hill sidings as we passed. I next boarded a 319 on the Warrington Bank Quay service and caught another Virgin Pendolino back down to Crewe, at Arpley a Schenker class 90 and two EWS class 66`s were in the yard. Returning to Liverpool Lime Street again from Crewe, on a London Midland 350. I was pleasantly surprised to find Thameslink liveried 319 362 on a Manchester Airport service this time, so I caught it through to the Airport and back into Manchester Piccadilly, arriving back home by 20.00, another full day out.
