Hi all,

I've just received my formal offer offer subject to medical and pre-employment checks.

I wondered whether it's possible to claim for the expenses of attending the medical? I didn't try to claim for the assessment or interview, but the medical will cost me a day's pay as well as the rail fare.

Or will asking put their backs up?

Thank you

I think you should call your new LOM and let us know what is said.

I understand where you're coming from and once within network rail you can claim back travel when you need to go to a new place for training or medical etc.....but you've not even signed a real contract yet - until you have a pass for medical and pre-employment checks you don't work for network rail, I'd definitely just take the hit and not ask!

I've had a look at the business expenses policy and there's not really anything that covers this. Especially as at the time of the medical you weren't a Network Rail employee. I suppose there's an outside chance your LOM may be able to negotiate an ex gratia payment with HR for you, if they're feeling sympathetic but I really wouldn't count on it. Presumably the loss of one day's pay and travel costs will be more than offset by your potential earnings in your new career though...?

As above really, I think the joy of getting the job would far out way the expense, certainly for me anyway ! I'm surprised they don't give you s rail pass though, SWT did when I went to Southampton for an assesment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy.

But I also have a family to support and have already lost 3 days pay from assessment day and 2 interviews. I have a young family to support snd every penny counts. My current career pays more than what I am moving into, but long term it's better for my family.

The reason I asked is that several friends have said it's very common for interviews to pay for the expense of attending interviews. My wife has worked in HR in a couple of companies and has also said that it's common. So having taken the hit a few times I thought I'd ask.

But I won't if it's not the norm . I just wish it wasn't going to take the whole day to get to and from Manchester.

A signaller works for Network Rail though and as they aren't a TOC they can't give out free train passes like SWT did for you. It would be a case of claim expenses on a purchased ticket.

Network Rail are still issuing signallers with Warrants to travel to safety briefings! The company must shell out hundreds of thousands of quid each year solely on staff duty rail travel. It's scandalous really.

NR still issue train tickets in advance. Generally the company won't ask you to buy a ticket and then reimburse you (though this can also happen).
