https://www.virgintrainseastcoast.com/news/four-trains-four-generations---history-to-be-made-on-yorkshires-east-coast-main-line/

A world first will take place in Yorkshire next month to celebrate the heritage and future of one of the country’s most iconic railway lines.

Four trains spanning four generations will travel side by side, in the same direction, along the East Coast Main Line on (Sunday) April 23 2017.

The Flying Scotsman, 125, 225 and 800 side-by-side! Looks like there will be lots of opportunity for photos!

How about put a deltic behind the Flying Scotsman on the train to at least have all the most recent ECML locos together.

Or even top-and-tail it, since the other three lines will already feature driving cabs at both ends.

Interesting that the Network Rail MD's quote in the press release says they'll be doing it "without impacting regular passengers". Admittedly it's a Sunday, but will be interested to see how they manage to fit it in.

Line is closed north of York until 10am, on Sunday mornings, so highly likely it will be done before normal operations start.

Exactly - I would have thought it would be an appropriate occasion to use a diesel ('Deltic') as 'insurance' while also providing a vital element of the ECML's history.

OK - I hadn't realised that there was such a long-running closure regime in place - thanks.
Indeed, last northbound service on Saturdays from York is something like 19:35 and first southbound service through from Newcastle is 09:25 I do believe.

You'd need five adjacent running lines, at least two of them electrified, if you wanted to include a Deltic. Is there anywhere like this long enough for a sustained run?

How about top & tailing a train with Scotsman and a Deltic and doing two runs, one in each direction?

Puts me in mind of the publicity shot BR undertook at York in 1978 to publicise the launch of the new Intercity 125s on the ECML, which featured six examples of East Coast express passenger traction from Stirling Single No.1 through to an HST set (254009), and including a Deltic (55013 "The Black Watch" in that instance). There's a grainy reproduction of the image here:

That was a posed photograph though, rather than anything as ambitious as parallel running.

I now think it's likely, based on the NRM press release about the Deltic 'moving Flying Scotsman ito position', that it will be one of the two trains travelling 'bang road', and will indeed be top-and-tailed.

Edit: Especially since the run will be southbound, a left-to-right oldest-to-newest formation for the publicity shots would indeed put Flying Scotsman and the HST on the wrong-direction tracks.

Well think about it, A HST Has power cars with a cab at either end, a 91 has a DVT at the other end and a class 800 has cabs at either end. One thought though, the press release states they'll move north and then run south into the station, wouldn't that require turning a 91 set? As usually, the 91 is on the north end of the sets.

There's about five miles north from Peterborough to Helpston, although I think it's a little bit late now to be making alternate suggestions. ;)

Good point. Newcastle is of course more convenient for such a task than for any other traction on any other line.

Saturday night until c.10:00 Sunday mornings in March, April and May - it gives a bit more time to get work done.

It's annoying but I think, overall, I prefer it to a number of total weekend blockades that was presumably the other choice (even if it reduced the number of weekends effected).

Technically, two of those didn't belong to the original mainline ;)

So do we know yet how exactly we will be able to watch?

I did wonder if they might put No.1 on display somewhere. My big concern is trespass as the press release suggest a 'media viewing area' no mention of public ones. Given its a Sunday & school holidays plus the number of enthusiasts who will turn up it could get interesting

The last main line parallel run I can think of was at the last proper Steam on the Met in 2000- the Aussies do it every year as part of the Hunter Valley steam festival, one for my bucket list!

Maybe I'm being too cynical, but looking at those involved in running this event I can see why the Deltic isn't one of the main four for the side-by-side run.

- VTEC/Hitachi obviously want to publicise the new Azuma.
- NRM will never shy away from keeping Flying Scotsman in the limelight so long as it is able to pay back some of the millions invested in her.
- The 125 and 225 are to a degree in the "shop window" - useful to have them in an event that'll no doubt attract a worldwide audience of railway-minded folk.

The Deltics on the other hand aren't new, haven't cost millions to restore (yet), and aren't looking to be sold en masse.

As I say maybe being too cynical, however...

Not cynical at all, spot on I would say, really needs a Deltic in my opinion.
