Bonnybridge in Central Scotland is a no brainer to me! Post EGIP and located on the Perth lines between Greenhill lower and Carmuirs West junctions.

As well as serving the sizeable towns of Bonnybridge and Denny, it could help relieve pressure at nearby Larbert and Croy stations who's car parks are filled way past capacity by about 8am every weekday.

It would also become a useful interchange between Cumbernauld - Falkirk/Edinburgh and Glasgow - Stirling services rather than the currently accepted cumbersome and time consuming interchange of Falkirk Grahamston.

It does seem rather unfair that populous places alongside main lines should be deprived of a station while smaller places on lines that can accommodate more stopping services get them. I don't know what the answer is though.

Going beyond the brief in the OP, the slow line between LSP and Edge Hill ought really to be incorporated into Merseyrail and given at least a 15 minute frequency. There are many students as well as ordinary commuters who live in that area and the buses can be extremely slow, not just because of traffic, but because of the great crush of passengers joining and leaving.

I love your idea but there is currently not enough rolling stock or capacity at Lime Street for a quarter hourly service. The current half hourly service has to share platforms with other trains.

You can't not open a station somewhere because it's a "hole". :D

There are countless stations up and down this land that serve less than desirable places, a lot far worse than the one horse town that is Clay Cross. ;)

There isn't a hope in hell of Clay Cross ever being reopened thanks to state intervention. The authorities will never admit it for fear of a peasant revolt but a contributing factor in their decision is that Clay Cross is a hole.

I'm afraid to say that the horse left a long time a go.

That's why Merseyrail ought to take it over and run through the Wapping tunnel to Central. Of course they would need more rolling stock as well but it should be a long-term plan. Anyway aren't there soon going to be a couple more platforms at Lime Street?

Yeah, this is more long term thinking but not impossible. In the short term the Wapping Tunnel isn't going to be open and Central isn't going to get any bigger, also you are back down to 2 tracks past the carriage sidings at Edge Hill. Like you say though I reckon it should be a long term plan. In the words of Oddball (If you know who I mean, ha ha) So many positive waves!

There are several places in and around Cambridge where new stations could be built:
  • Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge South)
  • Fulbourne or Cherry Hinton (could serve as a Park & Ride)
  • Hinxton or Ickleton

The latter is of close interest to me, since I work in Hinxton. This small village has a scientific research facility employing around 2500 people, with plans for large expansion. Most arrive by car. There are no public buses to the site, with an irregular (approx every 2 hours) bus to the nearby village. There are a few staff only coaches from Cambridge, but this limits the travel options for staff. It seems to be a perfect candidate for a simple platform and shelter type of station. Since most journeys would end there, no expensive ticket halls or anything like that would need to be provided.

For anyone who doesn't know, the roads in Cambridge are almost at full capacity during rush hours. Even country roads and dual carraigeways are regularly clogged up.

I would like to see a station on the Philips park Ashburys line in Manchester serving Manchester city football ground in Eastlands. The surrounding streets and the traffic in the area is terrible. There has been talk of building a station here for a while -whether it will happen or not I don't know.

I'm not a City fan but is the tram link not already sufficient?

Is the line in question currently freight only?

Some kind of halt to the north of Exeter st David's would be quite useful. Somewhere around erm. Maybe Cowley Bridge? Yes that would be good. ;)

Longsight - there are just as many potential journeys from here as from Levenshulme or Mauldeth Road, and the bus is much slower than a train would be.

All the places in East Lothian that have been proposed. Also Portobello.

Fulbourn (aka Cambridge East).

Achnasheen South Halt. That's based on having been trapped on the wrong side of a flooded valley with a long walk to get back to the road. The railway would have helped, if there had been a station in the right place and any trains running on whatever date that was.

As others have said Peterlee I think should have a station.

A proper station serving Gateshead would be nice as well.

There has been talk of airport stations for Doncaster, City of Derry and Inverness airports however given the lack of passengers at these airports I can't see it ever happening

Dalcross station is planned to be open by 2019 and has local and national (i.e. Scottish) government support and funding.

A station at Finningley would only be useful if the Lincoln-Doncaster line had more train services - currently there are only 5 trains daily except Sundays, with an irregular pattern.

Camberwell, to serve one of London's biggest rail black holes, on the Thameslink lines between Elephant and Castle and Loughborough Junction. Has been seriously proposed a few times.

Likewise, in the same neck of the woods, a station on the London Overground (South London Line) at Brixton and/or Loughborough Junction. They say Brixton itself too expensive / difficult due to the curved track, but there are options nearby or halfway between.

What kind of railway station would you build there to get 55000 people away in a reasonable amount of time. I'll be there tomorrow with my fellow reds so any alternative travel advice is much appreciated. Ha ha.

You wouldn't need to cope with all 55,000 by rail, so that will help. Likewise if being able to viably send people in two directions (or more) also helps, as does having fairly frequent services with long (12 coach) trains

Assuming 20,000 people going by rail on a 30/70 split in direction on a 20 minute frequency and getting 1150 people ramed into a train it would take 4 hours.

Metrolink seems to have a pretty slick operation anyway to clear crowds after Matches at the Etihad. Plus it's a pretty easy walk anyway to Manchester Piccadilly and Ashburys, which gives sufficient dispersal.

Apart from not being clear what would serve it (and you can't just make extra trains appear on matchdays), I don't think an Eastlands station would wash its face in its day-to-day existence.

Within earshot of trains passing the one and half
Lancashire County Council seem to be more in favour of Skelmersdale than Midge Hall, though I totally agree that a station should be built there.

Strictly speaking reinstated, but would now have to go south of the road, opposite the 'box. The problem (despite what the hardcore activists might say) is a low BCR.

My suggestion is Oubeck - loops already in, next to Lancaster Uni and the proposedBailrigg garden village.

There is a case for services running through Ashburys from the east going direct to Victoria and other stations on the west side of Manchester. This would provide a direct service to this part of Manchester which although the long way round, passengers might find more convenient as it would not require a change. It would also allow a connection into services at Victoria such as the faster TPE services.

The problem with this type of service development is that it is very difficult to work out a future level of use that would justify the development. If this service was already running, opening Eastlands would be an obvious development.

Southeastern land
Between Hayes & Harlington and Southall. Serving the new 3000+ home development and the area labeled as Southall Green on Google maps. Could have it at the Brent Road bridge. Would also look at the never opened Crowlands between Chadwell and Romford.

The only stations that I can think of would be Folkestone East (Southeastern Main Line) although technically would be re-opening), because that would serve the east side of Folkestone.

Another re-opening would be Lydden (previously Stonehall & Lydden halt on Chatham Main Line) in Kent, while it does have a bus service to Canterbury & Dover - personally a train would be better for connections. (opinion only :) ) (Train > Bus :D )

More Dreaming than reality for these ones - (All Perfect for Class 442 - Railtours ;) - runs... )

Dover Western Docks - Honestly think it would have been good for Javelins to go there - as well as the cruise ship terminal and made a perfect terminal station.
Folkestone Harbour - Not sure on the reason but shame to see such a station go to waste - most likely going to be demolished but would be better even as a preserved line.

The line in question is indeed freight only, But it is going to be wired to accommodate the new depot that is planned for Ardwick for trains to run into Victoria. There was talk of running some trains from Hadfield/Glossop, New mills, Marple through here according to- The Manchester hub rail study a few years ago. I would like to see a station here if only to keep the cars off the roads as I have said its terrible on match days.

What places (excluding those that are already planning to have a station built) on existing lines would be good placed to have new stations built?

I am personally thinking of the following:

• Artington (a very useful location for a Park & Ride station for Guildford).
• Barns Green (between Christs Hospital and Horsham).
• Bolnore (just South of Haywards Heath as there is especially a lot of hosing development in this area).
• Brockley (a new station to enable Southeastern services to call here and offer interchanges with the current Southern services).
• Burpham (a joint station could be built to serve both Burpham and Merrow).
• East Clandon (i am aware there is already a station in West Clandon but one in East Horsley would be very useful as they are a fair distance apart).
• Fetcham (between Bookham and Leatherhead).
• Guildford (a station to the West to serve the Hospital and the surrounding area).
• Merrow (a joint station could be built to serve both Burpham and Merrow)
• Patcham (just North of Brighton and would also serve as an excellent Park & Ride station)
• Stoughton (just North of Guildford).
• West Horsley (i am aware there is already a station in East Horsley but one in West Horsley would be very useful as they are a fair distance apart).
• Westergate (Between Barnham and Chichester).

Can anyone think of any other cities / towns / villages / suburbs in the UK on existing lines that would be good useful places for new stations to be built?

Let's look at the Surrey one's.

Artington - If it were built in the V between the North Downs & Portsmouth Direct, then it could be good idea, but you'd probably want to build an access road to/from the Shalford A281 side as well as the A3100 to avoid serious congestion.

Burpham (Merrow) - Should be high on the list to be built as there's a proposed housing development at Gosden Hill Farm of about 3k houses.

Guildford (Park Barn/Research Park) - Another good idea, however this may well be scotched due to the serious gradients approaching it either way, also parking may well be very problematical, unless you demolish the current Tesco's and build a massive underground car park and then replace it, also Park Barn isn't exactly a desirable place to be at any time of day.

Stoughton - On a stiff grade out of Guildford, not brilliant place, it would be better located towards Salt Box Road which means it could serve Bellfields, Jacobs Well & Slyfield.

Fetcham - If located around the Cobham Road bridge area, it could be a valid proposition, however with frequent buses to/from Leatherhead and Bookham station being nearby with a fair amount of parking, it's unlikely to happen.

TBQH with Surrey County Councils poor rail investment stance, none of them are likely to happen.

Sussex.

Barns Green - Small village which is about a 8' drive from both Billingshurst or Christs Hospital stations.

Bolnore & Patcham - Best forgotten as they would constrain capacity on the already congested Brighton Mainline.
