Water Rates in Wales

As the more observant amongst you may have noticed Butts has decamped from Scotland to Wales - joining me 123 as an exile in the land of Taffs

I'm not liking the Water Rates Demand one little bit......:cry:

I have temporarily moved into a 1 bedroom pad and nearly fell off my seat at a bill for £555 !!!

Apparently any places that were converted or "built" between 1990 and 2000 have a Uniform Service Charge based on the average rateable value across Wales. Did I miss the "outcry" about this arbitary imposition ?

My Ex- Maritial Home in the West Midlands is 4 bedrooms paying less than £300 a year as is my sons 2 bedroom flat.

My bigger 1 bedroom Flat in Falkirk was about late 200's for Water.

It does say you can have a Meter installed free of charge but will the Landlord be happy? I'm certain this would save me a stack.

Also as Welsh Water is still Publicy Owned why don't they collect the Water Rates with the Council Tax like they do in Scotland ? (One Bill)

Do not give up hope !!! - you can ask if a Water Meter can be fitted and if not practicable they do some sort of estimated assessment that should seriously reduce your bill !!

Have just registered with Welsh Water online - all info on there !!

I think it's free prescriptions only. I've just paid for a check up at the dentist. I think it was £13.50.

Prescriptions (and parking at hospitals) are free. There is a charge for optical/dental work, unless you're exempted through tax credits, benefits, or similar.

I have to get the Bus to Work and the ideal ticket for me would be one that covers at a lot of South Wales ...... Megarider of some sort !!

Except Newport Corporation Bus Services :cry::cry:

I find paying money to Dŵr Cymru to be rather odd all in all. In Scotland, the water charges are just part of the council tax and I reckon lots of people don't even realise they pay for water. I hadn't factored in separate water bills, so with a huge increase in council tax and a new expense for water I'm paying quite a bit more than I'd expected. (More than offset by a decreased cost of living, though, not to mention that i use my heating a lot less).

I have a meter. £25pm (£300pa) and the readings they've taken haven't changed this. Haven't thought much more about it to be honest.

And it's just free prescriptions down here. And free hospital parking too (except UHW).

I have to move into an area covered by English and Welsh Law for Financial Reasons for a period of time..

I finally moved for good yesterday. Prior to that I had a Virgin West Coast 1st Class Trip going from SAD to Gatwick Airport and back earlier this week. Lovely Bacon and Chicken Wraps and copious amounts of Scotch

New Adventure Travel (NAT) cover a fair chunk of Newport now and accept the Weekly Network Rider if that helps?

Well I have a Cwmbran and Newport Megarider + Weekly (£17.60) apparently that does not cover the non-stagecoach bus services in Newport ?

That's right, it's a Stagecoach-only ticket. The Weekly Network Rider is valid on most operators ( but not Newport Transport ) in south east Wales and is about £28. If you can get to/from wherever you need to go in Newport on NAT that might be worth considering.

If you don't mind getting Newport Transport's slower and less frequent 29B to/from Cwmbran you could pay £17 for their Zone 2 Weekly.

There are 4 of us in our house, the washing machine is on almost continually, we have a teenage Son who spends half his life in the shower, we have a large swimming pool up in summer and we are still better off on a meter, we pay £58.00 a month which covers our usage quite nicely and is better that a £1000 annual bill.

We do live in the sunny South West and so have the highest water rates of the whole Country so you would need to do your homework on whether its worth it for you.
