Interesting point.

On our stock we (both drivers and guards) can only 'release' the doors. On the stock that had the incident, is there an option for both ? Did Mr Zee 'Open' the doors or 'release them'

On all the similar-era stock I'm aware of, re-releasing doors when they are not yet fully closed will result in them opening again of their own accord.

As noted above Merseyrail units do not have passenger controlled doors nor any form of SDO. The only options available to the guard on each side are "open all doors" or "close all doors".

(Edit: also local door)

IIRC the only PEP era stock which retain passenger door controls are the cl-315s and the former cl-508 trailers which were marshalled in to the 57xx series cl-455s

The reality of that is that there was just as much chance of a passenger recognising the hypo, or the Guard not recognising it.

If the Guard had not been familiar with them by whatever means from their own life, may have turned out very differently. We don't train Guards to be medical professionals after all.

One way to improve value of guards would be mandatory First Aid training, certainly.

Excellent idea although what level should they be trained to? I think the 2 day course personally. Would it get support from the unions though? Is it possible there would be a lot of scaremongering about litigation if mistakes were made etc?

A 2 day course sounds good, though even something basic like the one day First Aid at Work would be good. I'm required to do that as a Scout Leader.

There might be scaremongering, but that can always be countered by pointing out that no First Aider in the UK has ever been successfully sued or prosecuted for acting in the remit of their qualification.

Not this one again please. In this country a person giving First Aid in accordance with the laid down procedures within the voluntary societies manual cannot be sued.

However if they go beyond the remit/ procedures laid down in the manuals or are being paid to be a full time first aid/medical attendant then yes they can be sued.

A guard on a train does not fall into the latter category.

Losing a staff member for 2 days might be tricky for rostering. I was unaware of that info re no first aider being sued. I get the impression some TOCs management are not particularly good at refuting scaremongering.

With regards to passenger operated doors, the 508s originally did have this feature, when they were originally on loan to the southern region. It was when they moved north to their intended home, Merseyrail, that they got the passenger controls removed.

Though the plated over mounts remained in place. However, half of these were removed and moved to 507s to house staff controls when those were fitted.

Anyone doing such scaremongering would be wrong to do so and could easily be challenged as making false claims.

The 313s (both the Great Northern ones and the Southern ones) still have passenger door controls which are still in use.

This is why my toc stopped training guards and drivers in first aid. Any Training takes people off track from their rostered job, which then has to be covered. All comes down to £

The 313s aren't the original though - the original passenger control of doors on the 313s was a handle on the door which was pulled. After a few incidents of doors being opened on the move this was removed and full control of all doors was put with the driver / guard.

It was only much later (sometime in the 90s IIRC) that passenger control in terms of button opening was fitted to the 313s.

To clarify a point made incorrectly upthread, the RAIB are not appearing for the defence.

The expert witness called by the defence is, however, a former RAIB investigator.

The Echo write-up certainly makes him look good :D

I think these comments while a case is proceeding, is totally out of order, but it's your choice I suppose. Mods think it's OK, but I just hope it does not rebound on you and others here in any way. I admit this forum is somewhat obscure to the public.

Agreed. This should be locked until case is concluded. Put a sticky on the link to the case and nothing else.
