Oyster card found on Irish Seashore

I was out walking the dog and found this lost on the footpath. Nothing unusual other than I was among sand dunes in South West Co Cork, Ireland!!!

It appears to be new.

I took my Oyster to Australia once. Even tried it on some Cubic gates but it didn't work.

Lucky really, as I'd hate to imagine the cost...

Will the new Openreach provide a better quality of string??

As alluded to, I wonder how many have used an incorrect ticket in a gate (accidentally, not fraudulently!) and it's worked??

Not sure about that, but I do remember once accidentally using an incorrect ticket in a gate, which correctly rejected it, but was waved through by the gateline assistant I then showed it to....

They have a habit of doing that. Sometimes it's necessary I guess, but in this case it's just interference.

It does explicitly say on the back that 'Found cards should be returned to any uniformed member of TfL staff'.

As I understand it this card will be registered to somebody and therefore reuniting it with its owner is feasible?

I accidentally used my Mcard at Stratford "International" and it didn't work, though I did the same with my PAYG Oyster at Wakefield Westgate and it did work*- which was quite odd as those gates didn't work with the Mcard at the time and possibly still don't. I also have a Glasgow Subway smartcard but haven't tried to use it anywhere else.

*There was only 60p on it at the time, so I wasn't risking being charged the fare from King's Cross!

That's very strange as VTECs gates aren't smart card enabled

Not all Oyster cards are registered to individuals - I have two and neither is. It is not mandatory to register, any more than with mobile phones.

Interesting find. I think the most interesting out of place tickets i have ever found were four Russian Railways tickets for the Moscow suburban trains on a Gatwick Express class 460 train.

If Oyster Cards work the same as all other ITSO cards (like the South West Trains Stagecoach Smart Card for example) then their should be a card number on the back of the card that you can use to check the balance of the card on the internet or on various smartphone apps (try "ecebs smart ticket checker" for example).

Unfortunately Oyster is a closed system, all ecebs will tell you is what brand of card it is

Thats a shame. Seeing as it must be one of the most used smartcards in the UK it would be very useful to be able to view Oyster Card details on apps like ecebs. I presume then that Oyster Cards are not part of ITSO?
