... appears to have been standing near Greskine (just south of Beattock) since 1200ish.

SLW appears to have been instituted around it so it looks like a very long job..

Very heavy delays of course

1M12 2hrs and counting.. 9M55 2 and a half and counting.. and many others..trains being turned around at Carlisle, buses involved...

Yes, I'm on 9M84, the 1400 Glasgow to Euston via Brum, sat at Abington for the past half hour. We're carrying the passengers for both the 1240 and 1340 departures from Central. Time is 1538.

Overhead on up line is busted, we're waiting to crossover to the down. Flow of information from crew is very good.

Update, 1542, we've crossed and we're doing about 50 through Crawford on the down line.

Problem seems to be around two miles north of Harthope Viaduct - orangemen in quantity at the lineside there. We're now descending Beattock on the down line having passed what appears to be a trapped TPE 350 on the up line just south of the point. I suspect this is our culprit for the OLE failure, but it's quite a few miles north of Greskine.

Just approaching Beattock village at 1607.

Another TPE 350 having brought down the knitting?

The breaker also tripped when a preceeding Virgin train passed the section but was reset. Sounds like the pan on the 350 may have struck something.

I was on 12.12 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport. We made it as far as Carstairs Junction and then went back to Edinburgh! Ended up East coast to York and now back on TPE again

It was a broken registration arm I hear causing all the bother. Knitting still up.

1M96 shown on RTT has having been terminated at Beattock summit! What happened to the passengers?

I couldn't see if there was anyone on board the 350 when we went by. Even if they didn't have to evacuate at Harthope - Beattock Summit would have been luxury by comparison - that'll have been an unpleasant spell for the passengers.

If you look at RTT you'll see that we (9M84) were 'terminated' at Preston 101 late, but in reality we were turned into 9M59, the 1600 Glasgow-Euston and left 'on time' at 1817. Magic.

However bad being two hours late is, at least being trapped in the middle of nowhere on a dead Desiro or on a bus down the M74 wasn't part of it, and I've been comfortable and fed and watered throughout. It could've been a lot worse. I can't fault Virgin's service or communication at any point, and I'll get all my money back.

Looking at RTT, several trains have indeed terminated from the south at Carlisle, but I can see 2 successive trains which have terminated at Preston.
These are 1S78 (1530 Euston-Glasgow) and 9S80 (1443 Euston-Edinburgh).
The following TPE service (1S81) is running 71 late at Oxenholme, but surely it won't be carrying 2x390s-worth of passengers as well as its own?
I guess if VT sent trains north of Preston there would be crewing problems (eg no Glasgow staff to work them).

Just to help calm everyone, here's a tranquil view I took out of the window while we crawled north of Beattock. :)

I drove 1M11 (10.40 GLC-Eu) today so just missed all the fun although we did have an OLE trip passing Kingmoor, this turned out to be a birdstrike on Carlisle station roof (or scaffolding). My mate driving 1M12 was about 3 1/2 hrs late home...

I was on 9S60 (10:43 Euston - Edinburgh via Birmingham New Street), and there was an announcement around Warrington that we would be terminating at Preston - very apologetic I have to say, and very clear.

Fortunately for me I was on my way home to Blackpool so not really affected, but the train was busy with people going further north. Not only that, but as we all disembarked the platform was crowded with people trying to board - because the platform displays were showing the 13:58 TPE service to Edinburgh, and our train said Edinburgh on the side. Lots of confusion.

The original intention was for the train to form a southbound service, and First Class was prepared accordingly, but it appears that instead it resumed its journey north again at 14:19 (26 late), terminating at Carlisle. The 13:58 TPE service meanwhile also terminated at Carlisle and went ahead of the VTWC service.

At that time it's fair to say Preston was chaotic, but clearly it was a developing scenario so hardly surprising - I'm just glad I wasn't stuck in the middle of it all!

Yes, Carlisle was pretty parked up with trains going nowhere anytime soon when we went through around 1630. I don't have a crystal clear memory but I'm pretty certain there was 2x350 coupled plus a 390 all sat in non platform roads.

Disruption cleared but now 1M93 has failed at Parkside.

Not a good day for TPEs 350's. Looms like some short forming of 185s on north route tomorrow to make up for it...

Ooochy the 10:00x Airport to EDB is quite cosy at the best of times without the pax of the 11:09x Glasgow which also does quite well. Sounds like things were handled v well though with the acception of the masses at Preston.

Incidentally are any platforms still shut at PRE following the rooof dammage 2 weeks ago?

No, all platforms are good at Preston.

One of those times that bidirectional signalling would have helped to keep things moving.

An evacuation that seems to have taken an hour.

Given that single line working was in force, is it too much for pax to ask for an evacuation to a train going towards their intended destination?

Some people will have missed flights due to this disruption. They may not trust the railway in future.

I'm assuming they'd want to use the same type of train for the side-by-side evacuation so the doors line up etc. and minimise risks? Not sure how many other TPE 350s were about (e.g. going southbound).

Also, welfare/safety of the passengers will have been the priority, so I expect once this approach was determined as the best/only option, it was the next available suitable train they used rather than waiting perhaps another hour (or 2?) for something going in the right direction (by which time flights etc. will have been missed anyway). [Take a look at all the posts on the Liverpool incident thread about the 'unacceptable' 2-3 hour wait people had before getting detrained...]

The one hour delay on RTT isn't all going to be from the detraining process itself. The "rescue" train will have presumably had various signal stops/speed restrictions/briefings, and the process itself will no doubt have been done very steadily and carefully in the interests of safety. The train then has to get the all clear to move off and get up to line-speed etc. It's not exactly a scheduled station stop with a 1 minute dwell time...

It still seems disappointing that the railway can't get things moving more quickly given a relatively minor initiating event and one line being serviceable.

It always strikes me as odd that the line we are told is the most important doesn't have the basic facility to route trains bidirectionally. With 3 passenger trains an our each way it will hopefully one day be possible to route all the trains on one tract between Beattock and the Summit with minimal delay.

Admittedly it is possible that a further delay would occur for the train involved in the initial failure, but 1M97 1213 Edinburgh to Manchester was also booked to be a Class 350 and would presumably have run had the bidirectional facility existed.

A year or two ago the shoes fell off a 375 on the Up through line at Tonbridge, passengers were evacuated by way of a dedicated bridge to a unit on platform 2. It's not a procedure (AFAIK) for rail staff to evacuate passengers onto any unit of a different floor height or door width.
