I have fond memories of when my family used to take the motorail service, either to Carlisle or Aberdeen. The ticket used to include a meal, and we always had to go to the restaurant in shifts because we had a dog which couldn't go in the restaurant car. I especially remember a chocolate mousse I had once which came served with a Intercity Swallow logo on top!

Was going to say the livery on the intercity 125/225's (the latter one being my favourite) ad the coaching stock was my best memory. And the fact none of them were dmu's.

Contreversially - what Virgin did a fine job on the WCML until they brought the voyaers and pendo's in. Their loco hauled services also looked pretty smart.

yeah i agree the problems started when TOC`s like virgin started dumping the BR inherited locos, there was nothing wrong with them whatsoever Virgin have wasted £1billion

I dont agree with with that. I wasnt really around during BR period, but I remember Virgin Loco Hauled trains, and I think Pendos were a great sucsess. Not the voyagers though! But sometimes, new things come along and you have to let go of the old ones!

Don't want to go too far off topic but them main problem with the Pendos as far as I see are their cramped interiors (its ok in first class though), and the tiny windows. Also a shame there is no restaurant for standard class passengers. I think Virgin run a pretty smart professional service though.

The best thing about the old days was the Merrymaker. A chance to do long journeys to seaside resorts on the cheap.

I can rember when Intercity Ran the one per day Service from Liverpool Lime Street to Edinborugh and Retrun Journey which departed St.Helens Central at 17.15 (Return Journey) they operated it with a Class 158 which where proably Brand new then i seem to rember the unit that did it regular was 158799 or one in the 79x Series.

Also i have fond memories of the Class 31 Loco Hauled Liverpool-Blackpool North Service, No over crowded 156s in those days.

Intercity livery to me was always a livery that gave off a sense of importance as nowadays I dub it a the business livery as there was no rank OTT colors in there just black, white and a red line simple yet extremely effective.
I only travel with them on the WCML twice and both times I loved it and I used to us thew GEML and even that service was top notch albeit slightly less reliable but it was cheaper.
Personally I think Cargo-D should have gone with The later Intercity liveries on their stock.

Plus just to add everything looks great in Intercity livery!

I, like many others, do not agree with this statement. If Virgin did not have Pendolinos and Voyagers, they would not be able to run the High Frequency Timetable which is generally not going too badly just now; the only real problem is when things go wrong. But the HF timetable with the much faster speeds (especially to Glasgow) will be crucial, in my opinion, if we want to cut down on short haul air travel. Manchester and Birmingham passengers can virtually commute to London, and Liverpool has some amazing train services now!

This would never have happened with the old rolling stock. Although I do agree that retaining HSTs on Virgin Cross Country routes would have been the best option; would have allowed for fewer, longer Voyagers.

please can we stick to BR and intercity thanks:) yes i do know tht the pendolinos have made journeys faster but they can be very cramped and the seats are no where near as comfy as that of a Mk2 or a Mk3

In BR/intercity days travelling was much simpler and fares cheaper imo.

I'd like to say liveries were better, but as a child of that era I would say that, wouldnt I;)

Also, everything seemed to connect better.

You asserted that things were better under BR, what sort of thread would it be if people can't argue for both sides?! And me123 made a good post to compare what may or may not have happened under BR.

Many of your arguments seem to be about liveries and comfiness of seats which are relatively inconsequential and open to personal opinion. The real issues should be reliability, frequency and speed of services.

There's a place for rose-tinted reminisces of course, I loved the old days from an enthusiast's point of view. I don't know how old you are so don't know how much of BR you experienced, maybe you could tell us more about that? I remember some fairly poor standards of rolling stock and reliability under BR.

Questions:

- Would the entire West Coast fleet have been replaced under BR and the West Coast upgrade have taken place, thus allowing the step change in service levels afforded by VHF?
- Would the investment have been made to re-engineer the HSTs (before you say, that is a good thing!) or would they be allowed to soldier on and get less and less reliable? Would they have been internally refurbished to such a high standard as "Mallard"?
- Would the railways have been costing the public purse more than they do now?
- Controversial maybe, but would the Cross-Country routes have had their ailing loco haulage continue longer and get less and less reliable. Virgin had appalling problems with availability of 47s in the post-privatisation years. Say what you like about Voyagers, they needed them and had the funds and commercial nouse to go and get them, even if the trains they got were flawed.
-Would off peak advance tickets be as cheap as they are now?

On the other hand, full restaurant services are increasingly rare, flexible fares are increasingly expensive, timetables were better integrated for connecting services under BR and as said elsewhere, trains would be held if a connecting service was delayed so passengers weren't left stranded. The endless pursuit of punctuality at all costs has put paid to that. Another positive was that the IC225 project was also pretty successful, though the East Coast electrification generally accepted to have been done excessively cheaply under state control.

So there are swings and roundabouts... just saying it's interesting to widen the debate.

EDIT: I will just add, it is totally wrong to say there was "nothing wrong" with the ex-BR locos Virgin inherited! There's a picture somewhere of a Railfreight liveried 56 hauling a Virgin XC rake of Mk 2s because of problems with 47s in the late 90s, when the locos were already well over 30 years old

Geordie back from exile.
What I remember most about the InterCity journeys was that local connections would usually be held in the event of a (not too) late running IC service. For example Newcastle to Paignton, in 1988, changing at Newton Abbot, the local was held for 10 minutes till we got there and about 40 or so passengers changed to the local. Wouldn't happen today.

Also I think the railways in those days were run mostly as a service not a business. Whilst that probably wasn't the best way to run the railways, I'm sorry but it really worked.

Not to mention moving stock around the country without having to spend millions of pounds on repainting and refurbishing. Just a different sticker on the side, if anything changed at all.

Happy days......

That's completely subjective. I far prefer Meridian seats to anything an original HST can offer! Infact, I also prefer any Sprinter seats (when padded properly) and any Turbostar seats for that!

yup they sure were and you know what else the MTU didnt exist :D

If you want this to be a rose-tinted thread to warm the heart, great, it may last another few posts. A realistic thread to share opinions on the past and future will last a lot longer and be a hell of a lot more interesting. I see from your profile you're 16 so how you can agree or disagree with the previous poster I don't know!

And the MTU is the a state of the art leap forward in technology which will keep your favourite trains running for another 15 years, so stop saying things like that!

But wouldn't virgin carrying on with the BR locos not have been very good for them? I heard something like there used to be a lot of diesels coming out of Euston as the electrics weren't very reliable.

Ever heard of inflation?

I'm not really convinced judging by your (lack of) care for writing, that you are old enough to comment on British Rail. Please, do prove me wrong.
