I was watching a programme last night about "All You Can Eat" buffets, and the amounts some people can eat is staggering. One didn't get a drink as they were going out afterwards.

I could manage 2 plates and wouldn't be able to go out on the beer afterwards.

What could you manage?

When I was in my teens the question would be "How much have you got?" but these days I'm usually satisfied by the second (lightly loaded) plate and stuffed by the third.

Like Darlo its a case of Man VS Food. I dont go to all you can eat buffets much but if staying away I regard hotel breakfast as a challenge, particularly as it often costs 8 quid plus!

On the flip side I dont tend to eat a lot of snacky type stuff between meals e.g crisps etc, but openly admit to enjoying large meals. Not good for ones health and figure admittedly.

What I can eat and what I do eat are very different things. I could eat a hell of a lot if I wanted to, but then I'd be fat(ter). It does amaze me at "all you can eat" establishments that some people really do eat monumental amounts. Even if I could eat that much, I'd choose not to, and certainly not in public. I might go up for maybe three plates at such a place (and these would most certainly not be full plates), but it's not uncommon to see people going for six or more fully laden plates.

I think there is a greed factor about these establishments. Some patrons see it as a challenge. They've spent £10, and they aren't leaving until they've eaten their body weight in chips. This video is only really a slight exaggeration.

I can't think of the last time I've been to an "all you can eat" place. I'd rather have a reasonable portion of good food than a gargantuan portion of lukewarm mediocrity.

Haven't been to a buffet like that for a while, but at hotel breakfasts it's usually a cereal course, a fry up plus another plate with a couple of extra bits on, and then a fruit course to clear the palate.

Have enough and no lunch is needed :)

Given up on these places as all they serve is s***.

My Mrs. loves the breakfast buffet on Brittany Ferries : ham, smoked salmon, cheeses, cereals, mueslis, fresh fruit salads, melon, water melon, prunes, loads of different breads and probably half a dozen more things that I can't remember ! If you're still hungry you can add the cooked breakfast ! I don't know where she puts it all !

I just have coffee !

My most common all you can eat visits is premier inn breakfast. I tend to fill up so I don't need to pay out for lunch.

If I go to a main meal buffet, the secret is a flat drink that doesn't bloat. I can then eat through 4-5 platefuls!

In my youth, which was a long time ago, I could eat bucket loads in a single sitting.

Now in my very late 50's I struggle with more than a small plate of food and find buffet style restaurants not good value for money.

Nowadays I tend to eat little and often. Luckily I'm still under 10 stone in weight.

Image a cooking pot of 25 centimeters across, 10 centimeters high and totally filled with macaroni or spahgetti. And add for tast 0,75 liters of curry or ketchup plus 1 liter (or more) of milk.

During one of my holidays i was at an All you can eat and it took me 2 hours to complete the meal.

I find I eat less on holiday than at home! Tend to go for snacks and quick bites, reckon sitting down waiting for a meal is wasting quality beach/walking/swimming/drinking* time ;)

*Clearly the most important. Obviously.

To look at me you'd think i'd be up for a challenge when it comes to eating but actually as a rule i don't tend to eat that much. If i want a particularly large meal then it'll generally be the only thing i eat in that day, quite often 1 fairly big meal and maybe (but probably not) a light snack at the other end of the day is more than enough for me.
I CAN eat a reasonable amount and annoyingly i do if it is there for me to eat.

When on an open day at Sheffield University what must be 15 or 16 years ago now me and a few friends gave the old Pizza Hut buffet a go whilst away from the university at lunch time. I don't think it had been going that long or maybe i just hadn't been aware of it. I really did eat as much as i could, which back then was A LOT. So much so i was sick (thankfully not in public). From that day i haven't been able to eat the same.

A very surprising amount. Easily 7 or more plates at a buffet. Blame Filipino culture for that  . I reckon it will catch up with me sooner or later though. :(

How much I can eat, how much I do eat, and how much I should eat are totally different questions.

I normally eat more than I should but less than I can  There's a reason why me and t'missus refer to it as the "Fat Bar-Steward Buffet".

The real joy of a Chinese buffet is being able to try lots of different things though. But then I always was a sucker for some deep-fried MSG.

In my college days some of us went on a Chinese restaurant crawl, as we were bored with pub binges. Two of us managed three consecutive full Chinese meals in different restaurants. I consider myself the absolute champion after wolfing down a spring roll encased in a red serviette I found in my pocket the following morning.

Such an event would see me in intensive care now.

If you are male and under 30 then yes, it will catch up with you soon. If you're over 30 and can still eat like that, then good on you.

Having met me back in 2014 I'm sure you are more than aware that I'm indeed male and under 20  .

Ah, *that* Alex! Well, enjoy it while you can. It's all going to change in your mid-twenties.

I used to be 13½ stone, went up to nearly 17.
