Leeds Station concourse and platform improvements

Well the ones on the main barriers (Still only installed on the several rather than the lot mind) still don't do a thing, they don't even light up now!

Perhaps a bit of paper or something should be taped over them until they do work as I saw several people thinking 'ooh!' and trying in vain to get their paper tickets to read before finally admitting defeat and seeking out the attendant!

I noticed this yesterday, I had false hope of them working with my m-ticket. I was also wondering how they will signpost the ones that have been upgraded?

Can the attendants (or anyone else for that matter) even read a paper ticket in that station, or are they issued with high intensity torches?

There are so many tickets that do not go through the gates that the requirement of the attendants appears to be that you have something resembling a ticket.

I didn't even know you could buy tickets inside there!

All the barriers now have the barcode readers, sadly I'm on a MetroCard rather than paper tickets this week so can't test if they're actually live yet (I would hope so now they've all been fitted!)

On Saturday (28th Jan) I attempted, even though they had been installed on all the barriers, they still were only given a green flash! The attendant said they would be live 'soon'.

There was a few people who were confused as to why they weren't working, perhaps they should be covered up or something.

I asked about the scanners myself tonight and they said the contractor who was supposed to configure and activate them has had to take time off for illness.

One thing that came to mind today as I got off my train on Platform 17 is that 'Staff Only' door on the platform which would take you to about halfway in the Southern Entrance complex I believe.

Apart from the obvious issue that could probably be resolved of not having any ticket barriers there (Just move a few from upstairs, they're hardly in mass use ) why can't they open that door up for passenger usage? As by the time I get off the train at 17 and make the effort to get up to the bridge I might as well just exit through the main exit then whereas if that door was open I would be much more tempted to use the southern one!

The main barriers had no power at all this morning when I went through at 7:30am, but by the time I came back from McDonalds 10 minutes later power had been restored although obviously all the gates still in full open mode.

Not sure as to the point of the gateline assistants trying to seemingly run between passengers trying to check their tickets in the meantime

The number of people entering or exiting the station at rush hour would lead to overcrowding on such a small platform area especially with the running line off platform 16 so close and at 90 degrees to the exit.

I'm not sure I agree with this; if (as always seems to happen) a TPE train pulls in on platform 16 just as you're trying to exit from platform 17, the overcrowding as you try to get to the escalators and stairs is worse than if the doors on platform 17 were opened.

Indeed. Sounds like poppycock to me, given the number of people who have do sweep along that narrow neck of platform 16 next to the lift. I would have thought that was a bigger risk.

I've always thought it's quite a small area for the number of people exiting platform 16, same with platform 2/3.

Also I've noticed that the PIS is announcing more arriving local trains as well as the usual terminators from London. It threw me a touch when I heard "The next train to arrive at platform x is the xx: xx service from Skipton. This train terminates here.". Just hearing Skipton & xx: xx & platform x, I almost found myself heading for it but then realised it was an arriving service, not a late running departure!

Yesterday I noticed some huge cobwebs between the lights above the Southern Exit escalators. Someone needs to get a feather duster with a very long handle!

There is also a colourful mural on the main bridge I hadn't noticed before.

there is to be a new platform alongside Platform 1.
(I think someone wanted a Platform 0?? LOL)

Love the hi-tech solution. In the time it has taken to get them printed, I'm sure they could have updated the software and activated the readers......

Seeing as Platform 0s are the rail industry's new thing, I wouldn't be suprised if someone at Leeds has said "Well if Doncaster can have one"....

When they first added what has become Platform 1 in the mid to late 90's, wasn't it initially refered to as Platform X? Before being renumbered at around the millenium after all the work was completed? So perhaps they could bring that back!

It was Platform W (which stood for West or Wellington depending on who you asked). It was given a letter as it was some distance from the then-platform 1, on the far side of the former parcels bay- and by then it was known that the rebuild was coming and all platforms would be renumbered anyway.

Any more info on this new Platform 0? When will it open? How long will it be? Does it need to be in place ahead of certain service enhancements planned by Northern?

Perhaps it will be a dedicated platform for the daily steam and heritage diesel services to Carlisle? (Wishful thinking)
