What's the point in trainspotting?

I prefer to label myself as a "Rail Photgrapher" as I don't really like the idea of writing numbers now. (No offence intended, btw )

The way I see it, it's sort of like a "Pokemon Syndrome" in a way, think of the Anime's subtitle "Gotta Catch 'Em All" and you'll understand where I'm coming from. I'd perhaps put this wanting to picture every train in existence down to my autism, but that's a different story completely .

In short, I would echo what others have said before me: everybody has a hobby and I would suggest to the OP to learn to respect other people's hobbies.

Yes I am female and know I'm in the minority. I like steam trains and a few diesels and enjoy photographing them but dont know loads about trains like some people on here do. I'm learning though. I joined the forum cause I love being on the internet and talking to people, though I found it initially by Googling "railway photography competition".

I didn't know jack squat about trains until I joined the variety of forums I'm on these days. When I look at my old posts (pre-2006) I can't believe how much more I know now than I did then.

Well, define what a waste of time is? If it isn't your time being wasted then what does it matter?

If its giving a person great interest and its something they enjoy and they like doing it then to that person it certainly isn't a waste of time.

If its something that a person who hates doing and doesn't like it then of course they are going to see it as a waste of time.

I work on the railways, I model the railways, and I take photos of the railways, but I dont write numbers down. I have never seen the point in standing on a cold windswept platform writing / underlining numbers. Some people enjoy it, each to their own really. And of course we have those who take it to extremes... such as standing between the yellow line and the platform edge when the linespeed is 125mph and a train is passing.
