Someone asked about having first class declassified on a packed train. Twitter staff rightly said it was the job of the onboard staff to do that.

After that @mtinge ask this:

Have does it work for Thameslink?

I was on a short-formed train which did not appear to have an OBS on board, and the drivers announcement was along the lines of "Please move as much as possible into the train, first class... well don't worry about first class, please move inside the train".

Brilliant! I have no problem with the formal de-classification of first class when circumstances dictate - just do it properly! It's not hard to announce sensibly is it?! The railway is being taken over by glibness, it seems.

Does first class on Southern really buy greater relaxation and contentment? It sometimes seems that first class passengers pay a premium just to get even more wound up by GTR!

In my situation I get 1st on my whole journey, part of which is Southern and part SWT. i could split into 2 tickets, one standard and one 1st, but that is too much trouble then it is worth.

I'm confused - if you are entitled to first class throughout why would you even consider downgrading to standard for part of the journey?

It may be the case that splitting the journey into two tickets, one standard and another first is cheaper than buying one first class ticket for the full journey.

Because the first class on part of the journey is rubbish? Just my educated guess.

Route affected

Southern coastal routes

Train operator affected

Southern

Description

High winds are expected in the South of England in particular, south coastal areas on our network from Friday evening into Saturday morning. As a precaution, a speed restriction of 50 mph will be in place in these locations between 19:00 and midnight, which means journey times may be extended.

So how many stations are covered by the costal area? Surely we can't assume everyone knows where they are.

I would say that someone just made an oversight and we are all human but I notice a reasonable number of oversights and errors.

Or an unreasonable number of errors?!
They maybe considered unreasonable but terms of numbers where it occurs they are a reasonable number. I just didn't quote the exact number as I don't know what it is. I would not like to say it's a significant majority or minority as I don't have the stats. However it's more than the occasional mistake.

The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 5 characters.

Have now received season ticket compensation.

Surprisingly simple process FWIW.

Yes it was very simple for me too, except it hung on the final part so I clicked Ok again. I've now ended up with two emails confirming they've received my details.

BTW, does anyone know why, when copying the Southern contact web address, it displays as "State of Pennsylvania"? I asked them and they declined to respond to the question. It's, at best, very odd and irritating, and, at worst, suspiciously diverting (i.e. trying to hide something?).

I was on a Southern service to Wimbledon tonight. There was an automated announcement as we were approaching Wimbledon and then we stopped. At this point we were on time.

It seems a train that was running 7-8 minutes late in the opposite direction; and hadn't yet left Tooting Bec and still to stop at Haydon's Road before reaching Wimbledon, had to use the platform first.

As a result we were 6 minutes late into Wimbledon. No announcement was made what so ever. Obviously one or two hard the automatic announcement so got up to ensure they left the train promptly. I choose not to. Sensible it seems.

I had a tight connection, which wasn't official but even if it had been, I'd have missed it.

Would holding my train be best in this situation, given the other train would then be less delayed? Or would two trains now running with delays be worse?

The train in question was the 18.20 arrival and previous 18.17 departure. It could be argued that 3 minutes be seen train isn't long enough.

Also I noticed that there are 6 Southern trains from Wimbledon in the morning but it seems only three back in the evening.

Hope not - that would put it on the Northern line!

Isn't the official connection time at Wimbledon ten minutes? If you were six minutes late you should have caught an official connection.

The official connection time for Wimbledon is 6 minutes, except:
- Thameslink to Thameslink which is 0 minutes
- Southern to/from Southern or Thameslink which is 5 minutes.

Thanks for the correction. The second one is odd, being on the same platform! How does it differ from Thameslink to Thameslink?

Horrible again tonight, with the 1638 Blackfriars to Three Bridges losing well over half an hour between East Croydon and Redhill, where it was terminated. It sat there for a while and then continued empty southwards. There was a strangled attempt at an announcement at South Croydon by the driver, which cut out after a few words, and a recorded announcement outside Redhill which was so soft as to be completely inaudible. No other mention was made of the delay or the termination except when the PIS showed a message just outside Redhill. No information was available at Redhill either (as usual).

I missed the connection to Betchworth again, despite allowing nearly half an hour to make it!

Why was I expecting the next sentence to be "and because we were running late control decided to make the train run fast to Tulse Hill"?

The train terminated at Redhill due to an AWS fault, this time at South Croydon, from which it had needed to proceed at no greater than 40mph. This all caused congestion to a number of other services in the vicinity too.

It's getting tedious now - every time I look at the log, there's some 700 or other which has sat down with a power problem, brake fault or AWS fault. Fortunately I have seen far fewer door faults listed lately, and it's not like they're the only units which go wrong, of course, but even the bad days of the 442s didn't seem to quite equal this. /rant

I suspected it was that, given the clear signals and low speed! Thanks for the confirmation. Did the AWS fault, I wonder, prevent any information on the issue being given to us?! It's a good job the 700s had such an exhaustive testing process or there might be quite a few failures cropping up!

Pretty poor again this morning, too, with problems at either Earlswood or Purley depending on which announcement one listened to! Redhill was the usual desert of information.

I thought the connection time was 5 minutes but I was wrong. Still 6 minutes official connection holds up in general as I was switching from Southern to South West Trains. Not that it was an official connection, just one I thought would be possible, given my train looked like being on time and the connecting train late.

It is my understanding that Southern and Thameslink also share the same platform. I would have assumed Thameslink being 0 minutes is for trains that terminate and start there afresh as a new service but continue in the same dieecrion. However I thought that only occurred at Sutton.

Incidentally, looking at the train that held my one up, it went to Sutton and then on National Rail Enquiries App that evening, I couldn't see a continuing service towards Luton. It may have run ECS from there. The train I was on was 6 minutes late until it reached London Bridge, then it was just 2 minutes late due to padding.

Valid point about the Northern line.

Thameslink branded service do 'terminate' at Sutton before restarting, it is the southern branded services which 'terminate' at Wimbledon:

I still cannot fathom why the connection times at Wimbledon are so different for Southern to Southern/Thameslink and Thameslink to Thameslink as 'ManiacMartin' states - they both involve staying on the same platform (9) to change from one train to another and so should surely both be 0?!

Unless it is a fudge to avoid paying out delay repay for a journey from say Wimbledon Chase to Haydons Road when the Southern service is cancelled as "it isn't an official connection" at Wimbledon

But agreed it makes no sense, but when did GTR ever make sense? ;)
